Tacks vs. sutures: a biomechanical analysis of sacral bony fixation methods for laparoscopic apical fixations in the porcine model

Alina Katharina Jansen et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the biomechanical properties of three different fixation methods for PVDF-tapes in the context of apical fixations. Results showed that PVDF-tape fixation with two single sutures can endure significantly more load compared to titanium tacks arranged in a row or in a triangle. Sutures are therefore considered a stronger and more cost-effective method for PVDF-tape fixation.

Cervicosacropexy or vaginosacropexy for urinary incontinence and apical prolapse: A systematic review

Ann-Sophie Page et al.

Summary: This systematic review aimed to summarize the evidence on the efficacy and safety of cervicosacropexy and vaginosacropexy as alternative surgical treatment options for urge and/or mixed urinary incontinence and apical prolapse. The included studies showed moderate-to-high risk of bias and low certainty of evidence. Cervicosacropexy or vaginosacropexy may remedy symptoms of urge and mixed urinary incontinence and seem to correct apical prolapse in the short term, but further clinical trials are needed to improve patient selection and use validated outcome measures.

Suturing methods in prolapse surgery: a biomechanical analysis

J. Hachenberg et al.

Summary: Pelvic organ prolapse is a common issue in urogynecological surgery, with abdominal and laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy being the preferred treatment. This study evaluated the biomechanical differences of different suturing techniques in an in-vitro sacrocolpopexy model, finding that an orthogonal suture and continuous suture were superior in strength and failure displacement compared to in-line and single sutures, respectively. Further clinical trials are needed to confirm the significance of these findings.
