Evaluation of International Contemporary Operative Outcomes and Management Trends Associated With Esophagectomy: A 4-Year Study of >6000 Patients Using ECCG Definitions and the Online Esodata Database

Madhan K. Kuppusamy et al.

Summary: This study verifies the utility of international online datasets in benchmarking and monitoring treatment and outcomes in major oncologic procedures. It utilizes the Esodata database to update contemporary outcomes and monitor trends in practice. The results show an increase in the use of minimally invasive approaches for esophagectomy, a high percentage of complications, improvements in pneumonia and key quality metrics, but with an anastomotic leak rate still above 10%.

Comprehensive registry of esophageal cancer in Japan, 2014

Masayuki Watanabe et al.

Summary: The study analyzed data of esophageal cancer patients visited Japanese hospitals in 2014, finding squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma accounted for the majority. Significant differences were observed in 5-year survival rates among different treatment modalities, with a substantial proportion of thoracoscopic esophagectomies performed. Utilizing the JES and UICC staging systems for esophageal cancer staging demonstrated excellent discriminative ability in predicting patient survival.

Validity of operative information in Japanese administrative data: a chart review-based analysis of 1221 cases at a single institution

Takaaki Konishi et al.

Summary: The validity of operative information recorded in the Diagnosis Procedure Combination (DPC) database was evaluated. The results showed that the accuracy of operative information in the DPC database reached 99% in terms of type, date, laterality of surgery, and type of anesthesia. However, there was a discrepancy in the duration of anesthesia between the DPC data and medical chart records.

The Effect of Postoperative Complications After Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy on Long-term Survival An International Multicenter Cohort Study

Laura F. C. Fransen et al.

Summary: Esophagectomy, especially with complications like anastomotic leakage (AL), has a significant impact on the long-term survival of esophageal cancer patients. Complications other than AL do not have a significant association with long-term survival.

Validity of initial cancer diagnoses in the Diagnosis Procedure Combination data in Japan

Daisuke Shigemi et al.

Summary: This study compared the validity of cancer diagnoses in Japan's nationwide administrative hospital discharge database (DPC data) with hospital-based cancer registries in Osaka Prefecture. Results showed high concordance and positive predictive values of cancer diagnosis in the DPC data, but some specific types of cancer had low concordance in cancer stage, which may impact the results.

Risk Factors for Anastomotic Complications After Radical McKeown Esophagectomy

Haoyao Jiang et al.

Summary: This study found that male sex, older age, lower preoperative albumin, and a 5-cm-wide gastric tube are risk factors for anastomotic leakage, while the grade of leakage is significantly associated with the development of stricture. These factors could be valuable in improving perioperative strategies to prevent anastomotic complications.
