Detecting driver stress and hazard anticipation using real-time cardiac measurement: A simulator study

Laora Kerautret et al.

Summary: Using heart rate change is a good indicator for detecting driver stress and hazard anticipation in real time, providing a cardiac signature of anticipation while being influenced by perceived stress groups. Further research is needed to validate the relationship between increased anticipation/predictability and strengthened cardiac signature.

Evaluation of two short-term stress interventions in the context of mobility

Lisa Sophia Krahnen et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop and evaluate stress interventions for different types of stress that can occur during driving. The research shows that stress can be effectively reduced through stress interventions in a stationary setting. However, there was no significant difference in stress reduction between the two interventions in this study.

Driver State Monitoring: Manipulating Reliability Expectations in Simulated Automated Driving Scenarios

Jaume R. Perello-March et al.

Summary: The study revealed an increase in physiological activation among participants in high complexity driving conditions, and observed a modulation of trust in automation according to the group expectations delivered. These findings provide a background methodology for further research in driver monitoring systems and the training of machine learning methods to classify drivers' state in changing scenarios.

Multimodal driver state modeling through unsupervised learning

Arash Tavakoli et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a methodology to analyze changes in a driver's physiological responses within different driving patterns. The study found that different driving behaviors and patterns of driver's heart rate and gaze entropy were detected in various driving scenarios. The findings indicated that drivers' heart rate was more likely to be abnormal during harsh brakes, accelerating, and curved driving. Free-flow driving with zero accelerations on the highway was accompanied by more normal heart rate and lower gaze entropy. The proposed methodology provides insights into variations in a driver's psychophysiological states within different driving scenarios.

Evaluating the impacts of situational awareness and mental stress on takeover performance under conditional automation

Shubham Agrawal et al.

Summary: The study analyzes differences in driver's situational awareness (SA) and mental stress over successive experiment runs using physiological indicators such as eye-tracking measures and heart rate variability. Significant negative effects of change in NHR after the takeover warning on takeover performance were found, providing valuable insights for designing integrated in-vehicle driver monitoring and warning systems to enhance road safety and user experience.

Cristina Bustos et al.

Summary: Several studies have shown the relevance of biosignals in driver stress recognition, but this study explores the use of visual driving scenes to estimate drivers' subjective stress levels. By using AffectiveROAD video recordings, the study found that video classification with temporal information integrated obtained the highest accuracy of 0.72 in estimating driver stress levels.

Summary: Integrating contextual cues from drivers, in-cabin environment, and outside surroundings is vital for the safety of semi-automated vehicles. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using smartwatches for passive sensing to classify driving context elements with high accuracy. The results highlight the potential of utilizing multi-modal data from smart wearables for context-aware driving scenarios and improving privacy-aware data collection and analysis for future autonomous vehicles.

Effect of cognitive load on drivers ' State and task performance during automated driving: Introducing a novel method for determining stabilisation time following take-over of control

Vadim Melnicuk et al.

Summary: This research investigates the impact of cognitive load on drivers' physiological state and driving performance during an automated driving to manual control transition scenario, finding that high levels of cognitive load impair driving performance, particularly lateral control of the vehicle; a novel method is introduced to determine stabilisation times of indicators following control transition, showing that driving performance takes longer to normalise after high cognitive load in automated driving.

Arash Tavakoli et al.

Summary: This study introduces a human-centered multimodal naturalistic driving study called HARMONY, which monitors driver behavior and state through various data collection methods. Longitudinal data collection and analysis can provide a better understanding of driver performance in different scenarios. Through a case study, the application of Kernel Density Estimation methods and Bayesian Change Point detection methods in driver state sensing and behavior identification is demonstrated.
