Integrated multiple mediation analysis: A robustness-specificity trade-off in causal structure

Summary: Recent methodological developments in causal mediation analysis have led to different definitions, assumptions, and interpretations of causal effects, making it challenging to choose the appropriate method. This study proposes an integrated framework for mediation analysis with multiple mediators and suggests four effect decomposition strategies to clarify the relationship between existing methods. The study also highlights the importance of interventional analogues of direct and indirect effects in cases where natural effects cannot be identified.
