Patient backgrounds and short-term outcomes of complicated appendicitis differ from those of uncomplicated appendicitis

Takuya Oba et al.

Summary: Appendicitis patients can be classified into complicated and uncomplicated types, with different backgrounds and surgical outcomes. Old age, obesity, smoking, and specific medications are independent risk factors for complicated appendicitis. Mortality rates and postoperative recovery times are significantly higher for complicated appendicitis patients compared to uncomplicated and elective surgery patients.

Laparoscopic peritoneal lavage versus sigmoidectomy for perforated diverticulitis with purulent peritonitis: three-year follow-up of the randomised LOLA trial

Vincent T. Hoek et al.

Summary: This study compared the long-term outcomes of laparoscopic lavage and sigmoidectomy for patients with perforated diverticulitis and purulent peritonitis. The results showed that after 36 months, laparoscopic lavage was associated with fewer reoperations and lower stoma rates in patients who were still alive, compared to sigmoidectomy. However, there were no differences in terms of cumulative morbidity or mortality. Therefore, patient selection should be improved to reduce the risk of short-term complications.
