High-Resolution Estimation of Suspended Solids and Particulate Phosphorus Using Acoustic Devices in a Hydrologically Managed Canal in South Florida, USA

Ikechukwu S. Onwuka et al.

Summary: Conventional methods of measuring TSS and TPP lack resolution and fail to capture critical processes affecting their exports in aquatic environments. This study used echo intensity obtained from acoustic devices to create high-resolution estimates of TSS and TPP. The results showed that the rapid discharge releases typical of managed canals led to high TSS and TPP. This work emphasizes the importance of high-resolution estimates in assessing the impacts of hydrologic changes on sediment and nutrient export to downstream ecosystems.

Particle dynamics in stormwater treatment areas

David C. Fugate et al.

Summary: This study aimed to improve the understanding of the mechanisms and factors affecting the removal efficiency of particulate phosphorus in Stormwater Treatment Areas (STAs). The research found correlations between diurnal variations in windspeed and suspended sediment concentrations, indicating that wind-generated turbulence was responsible for resuspended matter in the water column.

Extreme Runoff of Chemical Species of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Threatens a Florida Barrier Island Lagoon

John H. Trefry et al.

Summary: This study showed that the concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus in different tributaries increased with flow during heavy storm events, with statistically significant equations used to describe the relationship between concentration and flow rate. The different land uses in the drainage basins resulted in varying fluxes per square km, with higher yields of dissolved organic nitrogen and dissolved inorganic phosphorus in the tributary with thicker, more organic- and P-rich soils.Additionally, major weather events such as drought followed by excess rain and flooding were found to impact the nutrient fluxes and subsequent algal blooms in the Indian River Lagoon.

Comparative Use of Hydrologic Indicators to Determine the Effects of Flow Regimes on Water Quality in Three Channels across Southern Florida, USA

Ikechukwu S. Onwuka et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationships between water flow and water quality in three types of channels in southern Florida, USA, finding that higher flows lead to dilution of water quality constituents in Peace River and Shark River Slough, while enrichment of constituents occurs in Hillsboro Canal during high flows. This suggests that C-Q relationships can be useful in canal discharge management to prevent water quality degradation of downstream ecosystems.
