Regenerable bacterial killing-releasing ultrathin smart hydrogel surfaces modified with zwitterionic polymer brushes

Shengwei Xiao et al.

Summary: Building long-lasting antimicrobial and clean surfaces is an effective strategy against bacterial infection, but developing an ideal smart surface with efficient and controllable properties remains challenging. In this study, an ultrathin brush-hydrogel hybrid coating with smart bacterial killing-releasing properties was fabricated by integrating antifouling polyzwitterionic brushes and antimicrobial polycationic hydrogels. The coating exhibited different antibacterial abilities and could be easily regenerated and triggered between water and salt solution. This work provides a new approach to fabricate antibacterial smart hydrogel coatings and shows great potential for biomedical applications.

Introducing SuFEx click chemistry into aliphatic polycarbonates: a novel toolbox/platform for post-modification as biomaterials

Wei Sun et al.

Summary: This study proposes for the first time a strategy to incorporate sulfur(vi)-fluoride exchange (SuFEx) click chemistry into aliphatic polycarbonates (APCs) for post-polymerization modification (PPM). A functional cyclic carbonate, 4'-(fluorosulfonyl)benzyl 5-methyl-2-oxo-1,3-dioxane-5-carboxylate (FMC), was designed for APCs through ring-opening polymerization (ROP), and a safe and efficient synthetic route was achieved. The study systematically investigates the ROP of FMC and explains the acid-base catalytic mechanism using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Exploratory investigations into PPM were conducted using SuFEx of poly(FMC), and one-pot strategies for both ROP and SuFEx were confirmed.

Thermoresponsive Nanostructures: From Mechano-Bactericidal Action to Bacteria Release

Rujian Jiang et al.

Summary: The overuse of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance in bacteria, posing a global public health concern. Bioinspired nanopillars offer a promising alternative to antibiotics, but dead bacterial cells on the surface can hinder their effectiveness. By developing a hybrid thermoresponsive polymer@nanopillar surface, the antibacterial properties of the nanopillars can be significantly enhanced, with the ability to release dead bacteria, while avoiding the risk of drug resistance.
