Characterization of microplastics in sediment using stereomicroscopy and laser direct infrared (LDIR) spectroscopy

Yi-Ling Cheng et al.

Summary: In this study, the analysis of microplastics in sediment using laser direct infrared imaging was performed. The results showed a significant amount of microplastic particles in the sediment samples, mainly as fragments, and non-plastic micro-sized particles were also identified. The study also discussed the challenges and uncertainties associated with this technique.

Microplastics in agricultural drainage water: A link between terrestrial and aquatic microplastic pollution

Moritz Bigalke et al.

Summary: The study found significant concentrations of microplastics in drainage water from agricultural soils in Switzerland, mainly composed of PA and PE. The size distribution of microplastics showed an exponential increase with decreasing particle size. The leaching of microplastics from soil in heavily drained areas globally could be a significant source of microplastics to aquatic ecosystems.

Summary: Microplastics from personal care and cosmetic products pose a threat to the aquatic environment. This study proposes a micro-simulation method to quantify microplastic emissions based on personal care behaviors and laboratory experiments. The results show that individuals' behaviors and attributes have a significant impact on microplastic emissions.

Effects of typical sludge treatment on microplastics in China-Characteristics, abundance and micro-morphological evidence

Xin-yu Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of microplastics (MPs) in sewage sludge from four major cities in China and the effects of four representative sludge treatment technologies on MPs. The results showed that MPs in the sludge were mainly fiber-shaped and the abundance increased after thermal hydrolysis. Scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed changes in the surface morphology of sludge MPs. It was estimated that 10^13 particles of MPs were input to soil from sludge per year.

The distribution and risk of microplastics discharged from sewage treatment plants in terrestrial and aquatic compartment

Xing Wan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the abundance, characteristics, and retention of microplastics (MPs) in different sewage treatment plants (STPs), as well as the ecological risks posed by MPs entering the environment. The results showed that a significant portion of MPs can be trapped and transferred into dewatered sludge during the sewage treatment process. The dominant colors of MPs were transparent, black, blue, red, pale brown, green, and gray, with the main species being polypropylene and polyethylene. Furthermore, MPs were found to be absorbed by oyster mushrooms, with fibrous materials widely distributed in their stipes and pileus.

New separation protocol reveals spray painting as a neglected source of microplastics in soils

Yaqi Xu et al.

Summary: Microplastics, a recently discovered type of contaminant, have limited knowledge on their sources and analysis. This study designed a new density separation protocol to separate paint microplastics from soil samples. The results showed that spray painting leaves a high concentration of microplastics in the soil, which is the highest reported in the literature.

Impact of vehicle type, tyre feature and driving behaviour on tyre wear under real-world driving conditions

Ye Liu et al.

Summary: The study reveals the adverse impacts of tyre wear on the environment, human health, and the water system under real-world driving conditions. By analyzing measurement data from taxi cars and using machine learning techniques, the study finds that tyre type, tyre position, and driving behavior play important roles in tyre wear, with limiting harsh braking and acceleration potentially leading to significant reduction in tyre wear.

Microplastic Textile Fibers Accumulate in Sand and Are Potential Sources of Micro(nano)plastic Pollution

Nirrit Cohen et al.

Summary: This study found that longer microplastic fibers tend to accumulate in upper layers of sand columns, while smaller fibers are more mobile, with nylon showing slightly higher mobility than polyester. Additionally, the study revealed that under flow conditions in soil, fibers can break, peel, and thin, releasing smaller and more mobile fragments. The findings suggest that microplastic fibers can become a potential source of smaller micro(nano)plastics and contribute to continuous contamination of nearby soils, surfaces, and groundwater.

Distribution and characteristics of wastewater treatment plants within the global river network

Heloisa Ehalt Macedo et al.

Summary: The main objective of wastewater treatment plants is to remove pollutants from wastewater before it is discharged into waterbodies. However, these plants cannot remove all contaminants, making them concentrated sources of residual pollution. Detailed information about these plants, including their locations and characteristics, is crucial for understanding the impact of their discharges and improving their management. A global database, called HydroWASTE, has been developed to provide information on over 58,000 wastewater treatment plants worldwide.

Worldwide actions against plastic pollution from microbeads and microplastics in cosmetics focusing on European policies. Has the issue been handled effectively?

Lamprini Anagnosti et al.

Summary: Microbeads, solid primary microplastics < 5 mm in diameter added to cosmetic products, can escape into waters and have potential impacts on the environment and human health. Despite scientists suggesting banning them, few countries have taken legislative steps, partly due to the belief that cosmetic industries have responded to the call for a phase-out.
