Cancellation of dipole moment of models of asphaltene aggregates as a mean for their dispersion in toluene and THF calculated using molecular dynamics

Orlando Villegas et al.

Summary: The study reveals that not only the tendency of asphaltene to form aggregates but also the factors allowing the stable dispersion of asphaltene aggregates are important. Molecular dynamics simulations suggest that the dipole moment of asphaltene aggregate models tends to zero when the number of molecules in the aggregate is large, contributing significantly to the dispersion of these aggregates.

Molecular dynamics simulation of model asphaltenes between surfaces of varying polarity

Wenyuan Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the molecular interaction behaviors of a model asphaltene C5Pe between solid surfaces of varying polarity in different solvents using molecular dynamics simulations. The results reveal distinct adsorption behaviors driven by the interaction between C5Pe molecules and surfaces in solvents of different nature. The adsorption behaviors are influenced by the nature of the solvent and the polarity of the surfaces. Potential of mean force calculations demonstrate the interplay between enthalpy-driven adsorption and entropy-driven adsorption. The study provides a mechanistic understanding of asphaltene-surface interactions in solution media.

Surfactant-induced wettability reversal on oil-wet calcite surfaces: Experimentation and molecular dynamics simulations with scaled-charges

Julius Tetteh et al.

Summary: Surfactant flooding is the leading method for reversing the wettability of oil-wet carbonate reservoirs, crucial for enhancing oil recovery. By combining molecular dynamics simulations with experiments on model systems, the study identified cationic surfactants as the most effective in wettability reversal, while nonionic surfactants and amphoteric surfactants showed weaker effects, and anionic surfactants had no effect at all.

Effects of zwitterionic surfactant adsorption on the component distribution in the crude oil droplet: A molecular simulation study

Peng Lian et al.

Summary: The molecular interactions between various components in crude oil and the zwitterionic surfactant DDPS were investigated using MD simulation and quantum chemistry calculations. DDPS molecules can form an organized adsorption layer at the crude oil surface, leading to the movement of components in both the hydrophobic interior and interfacial layer of crude oil droplets. Complex interactions (hydrophobic, electrostatic, and cationic) between DDPS molecules and components are responsible for the final distribution and configuration in the crude oil/water/DDPS system.

Pore-scale imaging of asphaltene-induced pore clogging in carbonate rocks

Qingyang Lin et al.

Summary: This experimental methodology combines core flooding experiments with X-ray micro-CT to visualize asphaltene precipitation in the pore space of rocks and assess the reduction in permeability. The study found that precipitated asphaltene occupied 39.1% of the pore volume and caused a 29-fold reduction in permeability. Furthermore, numerical analysis of the flow field showed that after precipitation, the flow was confined to narrow channels in the pore space, with good agreement between simulated and measured permeability.

Evolution of adsorbed layers of asphaltenes at oil-water interfaces: A novel experimental protocol

Sefatallah Ashoorian et al.

Summary: This study introduces novel experimental protocols to investigate the evolution of adsorbed asphaltene layer to a film of aggregates at a model oil/water interface by means of dynamic interfacial tension (IFT) and dilational surface rheology measurements. It is found that the transformation of an asphaltene adsorbed layer to a rigid film depends not only on asphaltene concentration but also on aging time and interfacial area perturbations. These findings suggest that standard deviation from Young-Laplace shape fitting can be a rigorous parameter to reveal the properties of the interfacial asphaltene film, which cannot be recognized by regular IFT measurements.
