Advancement of biochar-aided with iron chloride for contaminants removal from wastewater and biogas production: A review

Mathurin Francois et al.

Summary: The use of fossil fuels, GHG emissions, and waste are urgent problems for the environment and public health. Among various chemical activating agents, FeCl3 is the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly one to enhance AD and improve biomethane quality and quantity. FeCl3 can increase the BET surface area of biochar and effectively remove contaminants in wastewater and biogas. However, further research is needed to investigate its ability in removing water vapor and carbon dioxide during biogas production.

Optimization of a novel spray flash desalination system integrated with concentrated solar power utilizing response surface methodology

Faizan Ahmed et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigates and optimizes the performance of a novel spray flash desalination system integrated with concentrated solar power. The effects of flow rate, feed water temperature, salinity, and vacuum pressure on condenser exit temperature, boiler exit temperature, and distillate production are examined. Mathematical models are developed for each response, and optimization is conducted using Design Expert software and response surface methodology. The results indicate that feed water temperature and vacuum pressure have a positive impact on condenser and boiler exit temperatures, while salinity and flow rate have a negative impact. However, flow rate, feed water temperature, and vacuum pressure positively affect distillate production. The optimal factor settings are 0.4 LPM flow rate, 50 degrees C feed temperature, 15,000 PPM salinity, and 0.5 bar vacuum pressure, resulting in an optimal condenser exit temperature of 55 degrees C, boiler exit temperature of 58.8 degrees C, and distillate production of 7010 mLPH. Energy and exergy analyses are conducted, with mean efficiencies of 55.6% and 2.2%, respectively.

Effect of acidic pretreatment on the microstructural arrangement and anaerobic digestion of Arachis hypogea shells; and process parameters optimization using response surface methodology

Kehinde O. Olatunji et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of acidic pretreatment on Arachis hypogea shells and different conditions were considered. The results showed that acidic pretreatment could disrupt the recalcitrance features of the shells, making them more accessible for microbial activities during anaerobic digestion. Therefore, acidic pretreatment presents a novel means of energy recovery from lignocellulosic feedstocks and can be explored at an industrial scale.

Kinetics study of ultrasound-assisted chloride release from cementitious materials

Huanchun Cai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of ultrasound on chloride release from cementitious materials. The results showed that ultrasound power enhanced both the equilibrium point and release rate of chloride, while ultrasound frequency mainly promoted the release rate. Kinetics analysis demonstrated that the chemical reaction step controlled chloride release, and its dominance was not weakened by ultrasound. Interestingly, physically bound chlorides decomposed faster than chemically bound ones after ultrasound irradiation. Overall, the findings clearly demonstrated the beneficial effect of ultrasonic waves on improving chloride release from cementitious materials.

Green and circular method for chloride separation from acid wastewater: Application in zinc smelter

Xiaosa Zhang et al.

Summary: A circular method for dechlorination of acid wastewater using bismuth oxide as the dechlorination agent and its application in a zinc smelter were proposed. The process involved acidification, adsorptive dechlorination, alkaline washing, and regeneration of bismuth oxide. Experimental results showed that this method effectively removed chlorine from wastewater, and regenerated bismuth oxide still had a high dechlorination rate.
