Evidence of a Possible Viral Host Switch Event in an Avipoxvirus Isolated from an Endangered Northern Royal Albatross (Diomedea sanfordi)

Subir Sarker et al.

Summary: Recent studies have found avipoxvirus-like viruses in reptiles, suggesting that cross-species transmission may be possible. This study reports the discovery of a fowlpox-like virus in a northern royal albatross, a bird species not previously known to be infected with such viruses. The virus, named albatrosspox virus 2 (ALPV2), contains genes similar to fowlpox virus as well as unique genes not found in other poxviruses. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that ALPV2 likely originated from a fowlpox virus-like ancestor. These findings highlight the importance of host-switching events and the potential risk of disease in both closely and distantly related host populations.

Poxvirus infection in house finches (Haemorhous mexicanus): Genome sequence analysis and patterns of infection in wild birds

Kevin J. McGraw et al.

Summary: The study on poxvirus infection patterns in urban house finches in Arizona revealed a prevalence of 7.2% with low disease severity and most lesions located on the feet. Temporal and biological factors were not significantly correlated with poxvirus infection during the study period. Two complete poxvirus genomes were obtained, showing similarity with canarypox virus and other avipoxviruses.

Molecular characterisation of a novel pathogenic avipoxvirus from an Australian passerine bird, mudlark (Grallina cyanoleuca)

Subir Sarker et al.

Summary: Avipoxviruses are significant pathogens affecting numerous bird species, with many variants remaining uncharacterised. A novel avipoxvirus, mudlarkpox virus (MLPV), was characterised from an Australian passerine bird in this study. Genetic analysis revealed similarities with other avipoxviruses from shearwater, canary, and magpie species, particularly shearwaterpox virus-2 (SWPV-2).

Emergence of a Novel Pathogenic Poxvirus Infection in the Endangered Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) Highlights a Key Threatening Process

Subir Sarker et al.

Summary: Emerging viral diseases are a significant concern for human, animal, and environmental health, with novel viruses being found in wildlife species. This study characterizes a novel poxvirus, ChePV-1, which shows high similarity to avipoxviruses. The findings suggest a possible common ancestor between ChePV-1 and avipoxviruses, with implications for further research on cross-species poxvirus infections.

Genomic Characterisation of a Novel Avipoxvirus Isolated from an Endangered Yellow-Eyed Penguin (Megadyptes antipodes)

Subir Sarker et al.

Summary: Emerging viral diseases from wildlife pose major threats to vulnerable species, with diphtheritic stomatitis caused by avipoxvirus being a significant cause of mortality for the endangered yellow-eyed penguin in New Zealand. A novel avipoxvirus, penguinpox virus 2 (PEPV2), isolated from a skin lesion of a yellow-eyed penguin, shows high sequence similarity with shearwaterpox virus 2 (SWPV2). The complete genome sequence of PEPV2 provides valuable insights into avipoxvirus infections in the endangered yellow-eyed penguin species.

Summary: Marine bird populations are declining globally and viral diseases, including avipoxviruses, are a concern for endangered species. A novel avipoxvirus, ALPV, was isolated from a skin lesion of an endangered New Zealand albatross, with its genome positioned within a distinct subclade in phylogenetic analyses. This first reported ALPV genome sequence will aid in tracking the evolution of avipoxvirus infections in the endangered species.

A Review on the Prevalence of Poxvirus Disease in Free-Living and Captive Wild Birds

Richard A. J. Williams et al.

Summary: Avian pox is a widespread infection in birds caused by Avipoxvirus pathogens, with potentially lethal effects on both wild and domestic birds. The virus has been detected in at least 374 wild bird species, and its impact and distribution have been thoroughly analyzed. High prevalence of avian pox in wild birds on remote islands poses a significant risk to unique avian species conservation.
