Summary: Social isolation is associated with higher levels of biological markers (IL-6 and CRP) among older adults, providing insights into the pathway between social isolation and morbidity and mortality in this population. These findings suggest that IL-6 or CRP could be useful outcome measures for interventions targeting social isolation and its health consequences.

A new paradigm in sarcopenia: Cognitive impairment caused by imbalanced myokine secretion and vascular dysfunction

Danbi Jo et al.

Summary: Sarcopenia, characterized by reduced skeletal muscle mass and decreased muscle strength, is becoming more prevalent globally. The pathophysiology of sarcopenia is related to various factors including hormonal imbalance, increased intracellular oxidative stress, reduction of food intake, advanced age, low body mass index, and low physical activity. Recent studies have found an association between sarcopenia and cognitive decline, with common risk factors observed between sarcopenia and memory loss.

Summary: This study aimed to validate a hypothesized model of sarcopenia development in older adults in the community setting, focusing on the role of social engagement. The results showed that social engagement has direct effects on psychological status, physical activity, and oral function, as well as indirect effects on nutritional status through oral function and psychological status. The findings suggest that promoting social engagement may be essential in preventing sarcopenia.
