Biochar and Selenium Nanoparticles Induce Water Transporter Genes for Sustaining Carbon Assimilation and Grain Production in Salt-Stressed Wheat

Mona H. Soliman et al.

Summary: In this study, a controlled environment experiment was conducted to investigate how the physiological changes in wheat leaves during the vegetative phase regulate the final grain yield in salt-affected soils. The study also explored the protective effects of amendments such as biochar and selenium-chitosan nanoparticles on salt-injured wheat plants. The results showed that salt stress caused cellular damage in the leaves, leading to reduced biomass production and grain yield loss. However, the addition of biochar and selenium-chitosan nanoparticles mitigated the salt-induced injury and restored ion balance and carbon assimilation in salt-stressed wheat plants.

Effects of silicon nanoparticles and conventional Si amendments on growth and nutrient accumulation by maize (Zea mays L.) grown in saline-sodic soil

Ali Rizwan et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the efficacy of different abiogenic sources of silicon in mitigating salinity stress on maize crops grown on salt-affected soil. The results showed that applying these sources significantly decreased soil electrical conductivity, sodium adsorption ratio, and soil pH, while improving plant growth and physiological attributes. Additionally, the application of these sources also increased the absorption of phosphorus and potassium by plants. Therefore, the use of abiogenic sources of silicon can effectively alleviate the negative effects of salinity stress on maize crops.

Foliar-Applied Selenium Nanoparticles Can Alleviate Soil-Cadmium Stress Through Physio-chemical and Stomatal Changes to Optimize Yield, Antioxidant Capacity, and Fatty Acid Profile of Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Leila Nasirzadeh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of selenium nanoparticles (Se-NPs) on the physiological and biochemical attributes of wheat in cadmium (Cd)-contaminated soil. The results show that Se-NPs can alleviate the uptake of Cd by wheat roots, mitigate the negative effects of Cd stress on grain yield and water content, and have no significant effect on stomatal properties. Cd stress increases proline concentration and antioxidant enzyme activity, and alters the fatty acid composition. The application of 20 to 40 mg L-1 Se-NPs is recommended to mitigate soil Cd stress in wheat plants.

The role of anthocyanins as antidiabetic agents: from molecular mechanisms to in vivo and human studies

Francisco Les et al.

Summary: Research has shown that polyphenols, particularly anthocyanins, found in plant foods play a key role in combating oxidative stress and aging. Specifically, anthocyanins have been shown to have potential in inhibiting enzymes and affecting gene expression and metabolic pathways related to glucose, thereby modulating diabetes and associated disorders. Human intervention studies have also suggested that high doses of anthocyanins can be beneficial in preventing or treating type 2 diabetes, but further standardized research is needed to draw general conclusions and claim benefits for the broader population.
