How exotic Sonneratia species affect the spatiotemporal dynamics of mangroves in Shenzhen Bay, China: A remote sensing perspective

Zhongwen Hu et al.

Summary: The study aims to investigate the impact of exotic mangrove species on the spatial dynamics of mangroves in Shenzhen Bay, China. It was found that the mangrove area in the study area increased from 2000 to 2022, with a growth rate of 5.14% in Shenzhen and 2.38% in Hong Kong. The rapid spread of Sonneratia species was identified as one of the main contributors to the growth of mangrove hotspots, mainly concentrated in the estuary delta. The results provide valuable insights for accurate mangrove mapping and emphasize the importance of addressing the spread and invasive potential of exotic mangrove species in the study area, as well as cooperation with adjacent reserves.

Anaerobic microbial methanol conversion in marine sediments

Peter Q. Fischer et al.

Summary: Methanol is a ubiquitous compound in marine sediments, serving as a carbon and energy source for various microorganisms that compete for it using different biochemical pathways. Current knowledge provides insight into the sources of methanol, the ecology of methanol-utilizing microorganisms, and their metabolism, but the unknown diversity of methanol utilizers in marine sediments remains to be explored through metagenomic analysis.

A sulfate-reducing bacterial genus, Desulfosediminicola gen. nov., comprising two novel species cultivated from tidal-flat sediments

Jaeho Song et al.

Summary: In this study, two novel sulfate-reducing bacteria strains were isolated from tidal-flat sediment samples collected off Ganghwa Island, Korea. These strains were found to belong to a novel genus within the family Desulfocapsaceae, representing two new species. The isolates exhibited unique characteristics in terms of their carbon source utilization and respiratory quinone composition compared to known genera Desulfopila and Desulfotalea.

Transcriptomic evidence for versatile metabolic activities of mercury cycling microorganisms in brackish microbial mats

Adrien Vigneron et al.

Summary: The study used genome-resolved metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analysis to investigate mercury cycling in microbial mats contaminated by mercury. Rare microorganisms were found to play a major role in mercury cycling, with methylators exhibiting a wide range of metabolic activities under suboxic to anoxic conditions. Additionally, mercury detoxification processes were found to be carried out by specific populations such as sulfide-oxidizing Thiotrichaceae and mercury reducers included various microbial groups, including sulfur- and iron-reducing Desulfuromonadaceae.

A Thirty-Year Record of PTE Pollution in Mangrove Sediments: Implications for Human Activities in Two Major Chinese Metropolises, Shenzhen and Hong Kong

Si Chen et al.

Summary: This study analyzed sediment cores from mangroves in Shenzhen and Hong Kong to investigate historic trends in pollution with potentially toxic elements (PTEs). The research found that natural factors and anthropogenic activities both influence the distribution of PTEs in the environment. Results also support the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis, showing a relationship between economic development and PTE pollution levels.

Internal nutrient loading is a potential source of eutrophication in Shenzhen Bay, China

Qi Yan et al.

Summary: Shenzhen Bay, as a highly eutrophic area, is mainly influenced by internal nutrient loading which contributes 65% and 69% of total input fluxes of dissolved DIN and PO43--P. Sediment resuspension plays a significant role in providing nitrogen and bioavailable phosphate to the bay, while a considerable amount of DIN and PO43--P are exported through water exchange and residual flows into the Pearl River.

Large-scale differences in diversity and functional adaptations of prokaryotic communities from conserved and anthropogenically impacted mangrove sediments in a tropical estuary

Carolina O. De Santana et al.

Summary: Mangroves are crucial tropical ecosystems for climate change mitigation, but are facing threats from urbanization and pollution. This study found significant changes in microbial community structure and functional potential in mangroves impacted by urban runoff. Urban pollution led to the extinction of certain taxa in conserved areas, while enriching the impacted sites with pathogenic prokaryotic families.

The role of the Pearl River flow in Deep Bay hydrodynamics and potential impacts of flow variation and land reclamation

Ye Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that variations in Pearl River flow significantly impact the environment of Deep Bay, especially in the wet season. Land reclamation activities are also predicted to affect the Pearl River flow and the coastal ecosystem in Deep Bay. It is expected that reclamation will enhance the intrusion of pollutants from the Pearl River into the bay, while benefiting the removal of pollutants from the Shenzhen River.
