Identification and quantification of branched-chain fatty acids and odd-chain fatty acids of mammalian milk, dairy products, and vegetable oils using GC/TOF-MS

Xue Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of branched-chain fatty acids (BCFAs) and odd-chain fatty acids (OCFAs) in mammalian milk, dairy products, and vegetable oils. A total of 72 fatty acids, including 16 BCFAs and 10 OCFAs, were identified and quantified using GC/TOF-MS. The content of BCFA and OCFA varied among different milk sources and fat sources in infant formulas. The findings provide a scientific basis for further research on high-BCFA and OCFA dairy products.

Association of branched chain fatty acids with cardiometabolic disorders in humans: a systematic review

Nagam Anna Yehia et al.

Summary: Despite advancements in treatment, the increasing frequency of cardiometabolic disorders remains a concern. Primary prevention through diet and lifestyle approaches is crucial. Dairy consumption has been inversely associated with these disorders, possibly due to branched chain fatty acids (BCFAs) it contains.

Monomethyl branched-chain fatty acids: Health effects and biological mechanisms

Paulina Gozdzik et al.

Summary: Branched-chain fatty acids (BCFA) are a group of lipids found in various organisms and have potential health benefits including anti-cancer, lipid lowering, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects. However, research on BCFA in humans is limited and further studies are needed to confirm and expand these findings to improve our understanding of their relevance to human health and disease.

Characteristics of Red Deer (Cervus elaphus) Milk: Lactational Changes in Composition and Processing Impacts on Structural and Gelation Properties

Siqi Li et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the composition and properties of red deer milk, revealing that it is richer in protein, fat, calcium, zinc, iodine, branched-chain fatty acids, and α-linolenic acid compared to other ruminant milks. It also shows that red deer milk shares more similarities with bovine milk than with ovine and caprine milks in terms of physicochemical properties. This research contributes to a better understanding of red deer milk and its potential applications in novel products.

Fengen Wang et al.

Summary: A high-throughput gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method was developed to determine milk fatty acid compositions. The fatty acid profiles of different types of milk were analyzed, and the results showed significant differences among different milk samples. Goat milk and camel milk were considered as potential functional foods.

Update on food sources and biological activity of odd-chain, branched and cyclic fatty acids -- A review

Grzegorz Dabrowski et al.

Summary: This review synthesizes recent data on the food sources and physiological properties of odd-, branched-chain, and cyclic fatty acids, highlighting their impact on human health. The estimated daily intake of these fatty acids from typical Western diets is approximately 1.5g, mainly derived from ruminant fat. In Asian countries, significant sources come from spirulina and fish. For vegans and vegetarians, algae, selected plants, mushrooms, and fermented plants are the best sources. However, there are inconsistencies in specific fatty acid data from different sources.

Branched-Chain Fatty Acids Alter the Expression of Genes Responsible for Lipid Synthesis and Inflammation in Human Adipose Cells

Aleksandra Czumaj et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates for the first time that incubation with iso-BCFA decreases the expression of adipocyte genes associated with lipid metabolism and inflammation, suggesting that changes in the iso-BCFA profile in obese patients may contribute to adipose inflammation and dyslipidemia.

Comparison of Milk Odd- and Branched-Chain Fatty Acids among Human, Dairy Species and Artificial Substitutes

Silvia Carta et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare odd and branched-chain fatty acids (OBCFA) in milk from different animals. The results showed that milk from ruminant animals had higher concentrations of these fatty acids compared to non-ruminant milk, with the lowest concentrations found in formula milk. There were also differences in the types and concentrations of odd and branched-chain fatty acids among different ruminant animals.

Monomethyl branched-chain fatty acid mediates amino acid sensing upstream of mTORC1

Mengnan Zhu et al.

Summary: This study identified a lipid biosynthesis pathway that mediates amino acid sensing in the intestine and neuronal mTORC1, affecting development by regulating protein translation and ribosomal biogenesis. Findings suggest a similar mechanism may operate in mammals, providing new insights into the role of amino acid sensing mechanisms in animals.

Characterization of fecal branched-chain fatty acid profiles and their associations with fecal microbiota in diarrheic and healthy dairy calves

Hangshu Xin et al.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize BCFA profiles in young dairy calves, compare fecal BCFA composition between diarrheic and nondiarrheic calves, and explore potential relationships between BCFA and microbiota in feces. The results showed differences in fecal BCFA concentrations between diarrheic and nondiarrheic calves, with certain BCFA serving as potential biomarkers of health status in neonatal calves. Overall, this study contributes to understanding the roles of BCFA in neonatal calf gut health.

Branched-chain fatty acids in the vernix caseosa and meconium of infants born at different gestational ages

Weidi Li et al.

Summary: BCFA were found in breast milk, vernix caseosa, and meconium. Vernix caseosa contained nine BCFA, with the highest content in iso-16:0, while meconium did not contain five BCFA. The concentration of BCFA in vernix caseosa was significantly higher in full-term infants compared to preterm infants.

Summary: Two commercial stationary phases, CSH C 18 and Atlantis PREMIER BEH C 18 AX, were tested for separating a mixture of 21 fatty acids. BEH C 18 AX showed superior performance due to higher surface area and anion-exchange capacity. The UHPLC-HRMS system allows fast analysis without the need for derivatization or ion-pairing reagents.
