Total nitrogen and community turnover determine phosphorus use efficiency of phytoplankton along nutrient gradients in plateau lakes

Yun Zhang et al.

Summary: Biodiversity predicts ecosystem functioning, but other factors also have a direct impact on ecosystem functioning. This study investigated the factors influencing phytoplankton phosphorus resource use efficiency (RUEP) in nine plateau lakes in Yunnan Province, China. The results showed that total nitrogen (TN) contributed the most to RUEP, and community turnover explained the most variation in RUEP. TN also influenced RUEP by affecting biodiversity.

The effect of single versus dual nutrient decreases on phytoplankton growth rates, community composition, and Microcystin concentration in the western basin of Lake Erie

Mikayla M. Baer et al.

Summary: The primary management strategy for minimizing harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie has been to reduce phosphorus loading. However, studies have shown that the growth rate and toxin content of the HABs-causing cyanobacterium Microcystis also respond to the availability of dissolved inorganic nitrogen. This study aimed to determine whether a combined decrease in nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations could limit the development of HABs more than a reduction in phosphorus concentration only.

Evaluation of changes in M. aeruginosa growth and microcystin production under phosphorus starvation via transcriptomic surveys

Ruihua Dai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of phosphorus (P) limitation on the growth and metabolism of Microcystis aeruginosa. P starvation inhibited the growth and microcystin (MC) production of Microcystis aeruginosa, but slightly promoted photosynthesis. Transcriptomic analysis revealed downregulation of genes related to MC production and ribosome metabolism, while genes involved in P transport were upregulated. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the P physiology of Microcystis aeruginosa and have implications for addressing eutrophication.

Biotic and abiotic controls of nitrogen fixation in cyanobacteria-moss associations

Kathrin Rousk

Summary: Most mosses have a mutualistic relationship with nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria. However, the nature of the biotic controls and the evolution of the plant-bacteria interactions in this association are not well understood. The author suggests positioning the moss-cyanobacteria associations along the mutualism-parasitism continuum and using them as a model system to advance our understanding in this field.
