Novel Multi-Segment Foot Model Incorporating Plantar Aponeurosis for Detailed Kinematic and Kinetic Analyses of the Foot With Application to Gait Studies

Summary: Kinetic multi-segment foot models have been proposed to evaluate foot forces and moments during walking, but they often neglect the plantar aponeurosis (PA). This study developed a novel multi-segment foot model incorporating the PA and found that the PA contributes to plantarflexion in the metatarsophalangeal joint and midtarsal joints during push-off. The PA also facilitates energy transfer between these joints during walking. Although further validation is needed, this new foot model provides insights into the function and mechanical effects of the PA and the foot during dynamic movements.

Epidemiology of Foot and Ankle Injuries in NCAA Jumping Athletes in the United States During 2009-2014

Male basketball players have higher ankle injury rates compared to female players, while female gymnasts have higher rates of overuse injuries. Injury-prevention programs focusing on ankle flexibility, strength, and proprioception are essential to reducing the injury burden.

Sex- and age-related variations in the three-dimensional orientations and curvatures of the articular surfaces of the human talus

Summary: This study investigated the orientation and curvature of the talus articular surfaces in relation to sex and age using computer tomography. Results showed that the talonavicular surface in females was significantly more twisted in the frontal plane and less adducted in the transverse plane compared to males. With aging, the subtalar articular surface faced more posteriorly, and the curvature radii of trochlea and navicular articular surfaces increased, indicating a flattening of these surfaces, which could potentially lead to a higher prevalence of foot disorders in the elderly.
