Investigation of the self-propulsion of a wetting/nonwetting ganglion in tapered capillaries with arbitrary viscosity and density contrasts

Amgad Salama et al.

Summary: The movement of a meniscus inside a capillary tube has been studied, and it is found that the shape of the capillary tube affects the capillary pressure and leads to the movement of the meniscus. The fate of the meniscus depends on its wetting properties to the tube wall. A generalized model is developed to describe the dynamics of both wetting and nonwetting menisci, and a fourth-order Runge-Kutta algorithm is used to solve the model equations. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis is used for validation.

On the estimation of the size of a droplet emerging from a pore opening into a crossflow field

Amgad Salama

Summary: This study comprehensively investigated a droplet emulsification technique in which droplets were produced via membrane openings and terminated via a crossflow field. The study identified conditions of permeation and termination, and developed a model to estimate droplet size. Computational fluid dynamics analysis revealed the physics involved in the process and provided scenarios for comparison.

Three-Dimensional Open Water Microchannel Transpiration Mimetics

Zhaolong Wang et al.

Summary: The key problem in water transportation performance and application of microchannels is gaslock. Inspired by hummingbirds' tongue, researchers have developed a bionic open microchannel system that effectively discharges unwanted gas without affecting its fluidic performance. This technology shows great potential in oil-water separation, chemical slow release, and bubble discharge in microchannels, and even exhibits remarkable transpiration performance when exposed to laser irradiation.

Investigation of the imbibition/drainage of two immiscible fluids in capillaries with arbitrary axisymmetric cross-sections: a generalized model

Amgad Salama

Summary: This study investigates the imbibition/drainage of fluids in capillaries of arbitrary axisymmetric cross-sections, predicting the meniscus location and speed with time. Various driving forces are considered, and a differential equation is developed to define the meniscus location over time. A fourth-order-accurate Runge-Kutta scheme is used to provide solutions for different scenarios, with considerations for the effects of changing tangent along the tube profile.

Investigation of the Different Regimes Associated with the Growth of an Interface at the Exit of a Capillary Tube into a Reservoir: Analytical Solutions and CFD Validation

Amgad Salama et al.

Summary: In this study, the physics behind the emergence of a droplet from a capillary tube opening into a reservoir is investigated. The process is divided into three stages and analytical models are developed to predict the droplet characteristics. The models are validated through a computational fluid dynamics simulation, showing good agreement.

A generalized analytical model for estimating the rate of imbibition/drainage of wetting/nonwetting fluids in capillaries

Amgad Salama

Summary: Replacing one immiscible fluid with another is crucial for various applications. Research has mainly focused on specific scenarios, but a new generalized model has been introduced to consider all the physics involved and not ignore the displaced fluid. Validation showed good agreement with analytical solutions and computational fluid dynamics simulations.
