Designed metal-organic frameworks with potential for multi-component hydrocarbon separation

Luyao Wang et al.

Summary: Petrochemical-related gases, especially light hydrocarbons with 1-8 carbon atoms, are essential industrial feedstocks. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are porous sorbents with designable structures, have shown potential in molecular recognition and gas separation. However, the use of MOFs for multi-component separation in the hydrocarbon industry has been less explored, and this review provides a comprehensive summary of the progress in this area.

Tuning the Trade-Off between Ethane/Ethylene Selectivity and Adsorption Capacity within Isoreticular Microporous Metal-Organic Frameworks by Linker Fine-Fluorination

Mei-Hui Yu et al.

Summary: The pore dimension and surface property of porous materials play a crucial role in the transport of gases. To improve separation performance, it is important to design metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with functional groups that can regulate the pore size. In this study, four MOFs (TKL-104-107) with different fluorination degrees were investigated for their adsorption behavior of C2H6 and C2H4. The fluorination of carboxyl at specific positions (ortho and meta) improved the selectivity and capacity of C2H6/C2H4 separation. The results suggest that purposeful functionalization of the pore surface can enhance the performance of MOF adsorbents for specific gas separation.

A robust perylene diimide-based zirconium metal-organic framework for preferential adsorption of ethane over ethylene

Jing-Jing Li et al.

Summary: The adsorptive separation of ethane/ethylene mixtures has attracted great attention due to its potential in reducing energy consumption in the petrochemical industry. However, constructing ethane-selective adsorbents is challenging. In this study, a perylene diimide-based zirconium metal-organic framework (Zr-Me-PDI) was developed for efficient separation of ethane from ethylene. The Zr-Me-PDI exhibited superior stability and showed ethane-selective adsorption behavior. This research provides valuable guidance for the design and synthesis of ethane-selective adsorbents.
