Electricity-driven asymmetric bromocyclization enabled by chiral phosphate anion phase-transfer catalysis

Xuefeng Tan et al.

Summary: The authors have successfully achieved catalytic asymmetric bromocyclization processes induced by weak ion-pairing interaction under electrochemical conditions. This overcomes the challenges related to solvent polarity and electrolyte interference, allowing for electricity-driven asymmetric catalysis.

Paired electrochemical C-H bromination of (hetero)arenes with 2-bromoethan-1-ol

Yanxia Lv et al.

Summary: A site-selective electrochemical C-H bromination of (hetero)arenes with 2-bromoethan-1-ol through paired electrolysis is developed, where the anodic oxidation of Br- produced by the cathodic reduction of 2-bromoethan-1-ol is essential. The method shows good compatibility with common functional groups and can be easily scaled up. A variety of brominated products can be obtained with satisfactory yields at room temperature in a simple undivided cell.

Site-selective Hydrogenation/Deuteration of Benzylic Olefins Enabled by Electroreduction Using Water

Simon Kolb et al.

Summary: We present a simple and user-friendly protocol for the selective hydrogenation and deuteration of di-, tri-, and tetrasubstituted benzylic olefins by electroreduction in the presence of other hydrogenation-prone groups. The reaction utilizes radical anionic intermediates that react with the inexpensive hydrogen/deuterium source H2O/D2O. Our method overcomes limitations of previously reported electroreductive hydrogenations and has a wide substrate scope (>50 examples) with excellent functional group tolerance and selectivity for metal-catalyzed hydrogenation sites (alkenes, alkynes, protecting groups).

Total synthesis of himastatin

Kyan A. D'Angelo et al.

Summary: The study presents a concise total synthesis method for himastatin, a natural product with an unusual homodimeric structure. The final-stage dimerization strategy used in the synthesis was inspired by a detailed understanding of the compound's biogenesis. By combining this approach with a modular synthesis, a series of designed derivatives of himastatin, including synthetic probes to investigate its antibiotic activity, were efficiently accessed.

Catalytic Electrophilic Halogenation of Arenes with Electron- Substituents

Weijin Wang et al.

Summary: The electrophilic halogenation of arenes is a common method to prepare aryl halides, but reactions of arenes with electron-withdrawing substituents usually require harsh conditions and have limited substrate scopes. This study describes a mild protocol for the halogenation of arenes with electron-withdrawing substituents catalyzed by Bronsted acid, providing an efficient method for the synthesis of aryl halides.

Water enables the tunable electrochemical synthesis of heterocyclic 3a-or 5a-bromoindolines

Ying-Ai Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, a water-mediated electrochemical synthesis method was developed for the C3/C5-bromocyclization of tryptophol and tryptamine derivatives. By controlling the amount of water, the selective synthesis of 3a- or 5a-bromoindolines was achieved without the need for additional oxidants or additives.

Photoinduced Fe-catalyzed bromination and iodination of unstrained cyclic alcohols

Kaikai Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents a photoinduced iron catalysis that efficiently cleaves C-C bonds and brominates or iodinates unstrained tertiary cycloalkanols using NBS/NIS. The reaction demonstrates good functional group tolerance and high yields under mild conditions, providing a powerful tool for the synthesis of remote halogenated alkyl ketones. The resulting products can be further converted to valuable molecules through nucleophilic substitution or cross-coupling reactions.

Synthesis of Spiro 3,3′-Cyclopropyl Oxindoles Via N-Bromosuccinimide-Mediated Ring-Closing and Contraction Cascade

Rui-Ying Zhang et al.

Summary: A cascade reaction mediated by N-bromosuccinimide involving the cyclization/oxygen-migration/ring-contraction process of 3-(beta, beta-diaryl) indolylethanol was disclosed, leading to efficient synthesis of a variety of spiro 3,3'-cyclopropyl oxindole derivatives under mild reaction conditions. A possible mechanism was suggested based on intermediate isolation and computational studies.

Catalytic asymmetric preparation of pyrroloindolines: strategies and applications to total synthesis

Guang-Jian Mei et al.

Summary: Pyrroloindolines are important polycyclic indoline motifs widely found in natural products and bio-significant molecules, presenting a challenge to organic chemists with their rigid tricyclic molecular architectures and fully substituted carbon center at the C3a-position. Alkaloids containing pyrroloindoline display promising activities, making them significant in biological sciences and drug development. In recent decades, the synthetic targets of pyrroloindoline and analogues have attracted tremendous attention from the synthetic community, with a focus on catalytic asymmetric synthesis and total synthesis applications.
