Engineering Ru nanoparticles embedded in 2D N-doped carbon nanosheets decorated with 2D Fe3O4-Fe3C heterostructures for efficient hydrogen evolution in alkaline and acidic media

Tiantian Feng et al.

Summary: Tailoring the surface composition and structures of catalysts can affect their catalytic performance in the hydrogen evolution reaction. In this study, Ru nanoparticles embedded in 2D N-doped carbon nanosheets decorated with 2D Fe3O4-Fe3C heterostructures (Ru/Fe3O4-Fe3C/NC) were synthesized. The Ru/Fe3O4-Fe3C/NC catalyst exhibited good hydrogen evolution performance and stability. In 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 electrolyte, the overpotential of Ru/Fe3O4-Fe3C/NC to achieve a current density of 10 mA/cm2 was 141 mV. In 1 mol/L KOH electrolyte, the overpotential of Ru/Fe3O4-Fe3C/NC to achieve a current density of 10 mA/cm2 was 148 mV. The current density slightly degraded after continuous I-t tests, confirming the good stability of Ru/Fe3O4-Fe3C/NC. The improved reactivity could be attributed to the high dispersion of Ru nanoparticles, enhanced conductivity due to N doping in carbon nanosheets, and heterointerfaces between Fe-O and Fe-C.

Ultra-lightweight hollow bowl-like carbon as microwave absorber owning broad band and low filler loading

Yalei Hao et al.

Summary: In this study, hollow bowl-like carbon (HBC) materials were controllably constructed by the hard template method, and their tunable pore structure, surface properties, and shell thicknesses contribute to excellent performance. The HBC with a shell thickness of 3 nm exhibited the best wave-absorbing performance at a 4% absorber content. Its minimum reflection loss value was -50 dB at a thin thickness of 2.26 mm, and its effective absorption bandwidth, at a fixed thin thickness of 2 mm, could reach as wide as 7.04 GHz (10.96-18 GHz). Thin shells are essential for achieving lightweight and the bowl-like shape prevents the formation of percolative networks. with a low mass fraction of absorber content, the HBC materials can obtain moderate dielectric constant and loss, leading to good impedance matching and sufficient attenuation capacity. This work provides an effective and sustainable approach to utilize porous carbon materials for developing lightweight and high-performance wave-absorbing materials.
