3D Laser Nanoprinting of Functional Materials

Shao-Feng Liu et al.

Summary: 3D laser nanoprinting revolutionizes manufacturing by allowing maskless fabrication of 3D nanostructures at a resolution beyond the optical diffraction limit. It offers printed structures with unique physical, chemical, or mechanical properties not seen at the macro scale. However, its reliance on photopolymerization limits its usability to certain materials and functionalities. The ability to print diverse functional materials and the development of laser nanoprinting techniques beyond photopolymerization open up exciting new applications in nanophotonics and microelectronics.

Observation of Quadratic (Charge-2) Weyl Point Splitting in Near-Infrared Photonic Crystals

Christina Joerg et al.

Summary: Weyl points are point degeneracies in the momentum space of 3D periodic materials, associated with a quantized topological charge. This study experimentally observed the splitting of a quadratic Weyl point into two linear Weyl points in a 3D micro-printed photonic crystal. The theoretical analysis showed that this splitting occurs along high-symmetry directions in the Brillouin zone, which is important for the development of robust topological devices in the near-infrared.

Polariton Bose-Einstein condensate from a bound state in the continuum

V Ardizzone et al.

Summary: This study discovered bound states in the continuum (BICs) in a planar photonic crystal lattice, which have a long lifetime and are not affected by radiation. The researchers also demonstrated non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation occurring in the BIC. By combining bosonic condensation and symmetry-protected radiation eigenmodes, they showed a way to impart topological properties onto macroscopic quantum states.

Impact of Stripe Shape on the Reflectivity of Monolithic High Contrast Gratings

Magdalena Marciniak et al.

Summary: Monolithic high contrast gratings (MHCGs) composed of a one-dimensional grating patterned in a monolithic layer provide up to 100% optical power reflectance and can be fabricated in almost any semiconductor and dielectric material used in modern optoelectronics. By using various common surface nanometer-scale shaping methods, MHCG stripes can achieve optical power reflectance of nearly 100% and exceed 99%, showcasing great potential for photonic device design and production.

Hybrid Semimagnetic Polaritons in a Strongly Coupled Optical Microcavity

Tomasz Fas et al.

Summary: Hybrid exciton-polaritons are demonstrated in a structure comprising semimagnetic and nonmagnetic quantum wells coupled via the microcavity optical mode, with the emerging states acquiring magnetic properties due to the susceptibility of excitons in the magnetic quantum well. External magnetic fields enable control over the degree of hybridization, tuning of the ratio of excitonic to photonic components, and alteration of energy transfer between excitonic states in magnetic and nonmagnetic quantum wells. The possibility of hybridizing a semimagnetic exciton with an exciton in a material lacking meaningful magnetic effects holds promise for systems with strong magnetooptical properties.

Guided-mode resonance on pedestal and half-buried high-contrast gratings for biosensing applications

Giovanni Finco et al.

Summary: This paper introduces two advanced high-contrast grating designs that enhance sensing performances compared to conventional implementations. Numerical optimization and modeling analysis show that pedestal HCGs and buried HCGs both improve sensitivity, with pedestal HCGs also increasing quality factor and buried HCGs providing a higher sensitivity at the expense of slightly broader resonance. These structures may serve as an improved sensitive biosensing platform for near-infrared spectroscopy.

Bound states in the continuum in resonant nanostructures: an overview of engineered materials for tailored applications

Shereena Joseph et al.

Summary: The evolution of BIC modes spans various symmetrical and functional mediums, with applications covering pure dielectric and lossy plasmonic BICs. Engineered functional materials combined with pure dielectric mediums provide a promising approach for hybrid-quasi-BIC modes. Additionally, discussions on applications of BIC modes in nonlinear harmonic generation, sensing, imaging, lasing, nanocavities, communication, and photodetection have been explored.
