Quench experiments on sub-size HTS Cable-In-Conduit Conductors for fusion applications: Data analysis and model validation

A. Zappatore et al.

Summary: This study investigates quench propagation in high field, sub-size HTS Cable-In-Conduit Conductors, with the recent experimental campaign conducted in the upgraded SULTAN facility. The analysis of experimental data focuses on the normal zone propagation velocity and hotspot temperature during the quench. A validated numerical model shows good agreement between experimental and computed results, and simulations suggest that a voltage-based quench detection strategy would suffice in a real-case scenario, leading to a hotspot temperature of around 250 K.

Validation of the 4C Code on the AC Loss Tests of a Full-Scale ITER Coil

Andrea Zappatore et al.

Summary: The AC loss tests on the first ITER Central Solenoid Module (CSM) have been modeled using the 4C code, and the results were compared with the experimental data. The model showed a good agreement with the measurements for both nominal and isolation modes of operation. The validated model provided insights into the unmeasurable coil inlet backflow and the non-monotonic outlet temperature evolution following the current dump.

The DEMO magnet system - Status and future challenges

V. Corato et al.

Summary: This paper presents the pre-concept design of the European DEMO Magnet System, which has passed the DEMO plant-level gate review. The design parameters are based on the DEMO 2018 baseline and include the design studies of magnet coils, conductors, and auxiliary systems. Thermal-hydraulic and mechanical analyses as well as experimental tests were conducted. Two TF coil concepts and two CS module schemes were selected for further development during the Concept Design Phase.

AC Losses in the Second Module of the ITER Central Solenoid

M. Breschi et al.

Summary: The ITER Central Solenoid (CS) will be assembled using six modules, and each module consists of 40 solenoid pancakes wound with a Nb3Sn Cable in Conduit Conductor (CICC). The tests of the second module (CSM#2) were conducted at the General Atomics facility in Poway, US. The results show that the main losses during the dumps from different initial transport currents are due to coupling losses.

Effect of Local Defects on HTS Fusion Magnets Performance

Andrea Zappatore et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of local defects in the manufacturing process of high temperature superconducting cable-in-conduit conductors on the performance of one module of the hybrid option of the EU DEMO Central Solenoid. The analysis shows that the defects cause nonuniformity in current distribution and temperature differences in the conductor, and the model is used to assess the damage level and hotspot temperature.

Advanced electromagnetic modeling of large-scale high-temperature superconductor systems based on H and T-A formulations

Edgar Berrospe-Juarez et al.

Summary: The development of high-temperature superconductors has allowed for the emergence of diverse superconductor devices, including large-scale HTS systems. Traditional finite element methods and the newly proposed T-A formulation have been used to address electromagnetic issues, and when combined with homogenization and multi-scaling methods, they can reduce the required computational resources.

Experimental and numerical studies on current distribution in stacks of HTS tapes for cable-in-conduit-conductors

Gianluca De Marzi et al.

Summary: Cable-in-conduit conductors made of twisted stacks of high-temperature superconducting tapes have great potential due to their easy manufacturing process, flexibility, and high current densities. The distribution of current among tapes in a cable is crucial for its performance, and a 2D finite element model can accurately predict the impact of different current distributions on the cable's performance.
