In vitro bio-corrosion behaviors of biodegradable AZ31B magnesium alloy under static stresses of different forms and magnitudes

Linyuan Han et al.

Summary: This study investigated the biocorrosion behaviors of AZ31B magnesium alloy under different stress forms and magnitudes. The corrosion was found to be more severe and accelerated under stressed conditions compared to unstressed conditions, with a greater sensitivity to tensile loads than compressive loads. A biocorrosion numerical model was established to describe the degradation process under static loads. The relationship between corrosion current density and applied static stress was found to be linear in the early stage but deviated later. This work provides guidance for further research and practical applications of biomedical materials subjected to physiological loads.

Effects of inorganic ions, organic particles, blood cells, and cyclic loading on in vitro corrosion of Mg -Al alloys

Guanqi Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of cyclic loading and corrosive environment on the corrosion of magnesium (Mg) alloys. The results show that a porous and weak inorganic product layer forms on the surface of the Mg alloy in simulated body fluid (SBF), which provides little protection against corrosion. In plasma, organic particles promote the formation of a more compact product layer that protects the Mg alloy. However, blood cells interfere with the formation of the organic product layer in whole blood, slightly accelerating corrosion. Cyclic loading damages the layer integrity and increases corrosion rates, but blood cells adsorbed on the Mg alloy surfaces form films that protect the Mg alloy substrate.

Initial micro-galvanic corrosion behavior between Mg2Ca and α-Mg via quasi- in situ SEM approach and first-principles calculation

Chen Xu et al.

Summary: The initial micro-galvanic corrosion behavior of Mg-30wt%Ca alloy in a 0.9% NaCl solution at 37 degrees C was studied. It was found that Mg2Ca corroded easier than alpha-Mg, indicating that Mg2Ca acted as an anode. Calculations showed that Mg2Ca had a significantly lower work function (Phi) compared to alpha-Mg. Experimental measurements indicated that Mg2Ca had a relatively low Volta potential (psi) value. The lower Phi and psi values for Mg2Ca suggest a lower electrochemical nobility, which is consistent with the experimental observations.

Effect of extrusion on the microstructure and corrosion behavior of Mg-Zn-Mn-(0,1.5)Sr alloys in Hank's solution

Li Lei et al.

Summary: The microstructure, corrosion behavior, and cytocompatibility of as-cast and extruded Mg-Zn-Mn-(0, 1.5)Sr alloys in Hank's solution were investigated. Extrusion resulted in grain refinement and preferred texture, while distinct features of Sr-free and Sr-containing alloys included an increase in dislocation density and fragmentation of Mg17Sr2, respectively. Extrusion significantly accelerated the corrosion rate of Sr-free alloy, while alloyed Sr eliminated this deterioration process. Sr alloying decreased the corrosion rate and enhanced the cytocompatibility of the extruded Mg-Zn-Mn alloy without affecting the corrosion penetration depth, demonstrating the superiority of Sr alloying for extruded magnesium alloys as implant materials.

Unveiling the mechanical response and accommodation mechanism of pre-rolled AZ31 magnesium alloy under high-speed impact loading

Xiao Liu et al.

Summary: Split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) tests were conducted to investigate the mechanical response, microstructural evolution, and accommodation mechanism of pre-rolled AZ31 magnesium alloy under high-speed impact loading. The results showed that twin and shear band deformation were predominant at low temperatures, whereas a combination of twins and recrystallized grains dominated at medium temperatures, and dynamic recrystallization (DRX) was almost complete at high temperatures. The competition among shear band strengthening, twin strengthening, and fine grain strengthening determined the mechanical response, which was influenced by the prevailing grain structure. Different deformation mechanisms, including twinning, dislocation slip, shear band formation, and DRX, were observed at different deformation stages and temperatures.
