Effect of bio-asphalt as additive on macro and micro properties of TLA modified asphalt and its modification mechanism

Yongjun Meng et al.

Summary: This paper studied the high temperature performance of Trinidad Lake Asphalt (TLA) modified asphalt, which is excellent, but its low temperature performance is poor. Bio-asphalt was used as an additive to improve the low temperature performance. The micro modification mechanism of asphalt was studied, and the mechanical properties of the asphalt binder and asphalt mixture were explored. The results showed that the mixing mode of TLA, bio-asphalt, and base asphalt is physical blending. TLA improves the high temperature performance of asphalt binder, but weakens the low temperature performance. Adding bio-asphalt significantly improves the low temperature performance of TLA modified asphalt at the cost of slightly reducing the high temperature performance.

Laboratory investigation on performance and mechanism of polyphosphoric acid modified bio-asphalt

Tuo Huang et al.

Summary: Bio-asphalt, as a green and clean road material, has limitations due to its poor high-temperature performance. In this study, bio-asphalt was modified using polyphosphoric acid (PPA) to improve its properties. The modified bio-asphalt showed excellent rheological performance at high and low temperatures, with the optimum content of PPA and bio-oil being 2% and 7.5%, respectively.

Study on aging resistance and micro characteristics of bio-asphalt/TLA composite modified asphalt binder

Yongjun Meng et al.

Summary: With the development of road engineering, the substitution of non-renewable petroleum asphalt binder with renewable biological asphalt binder is of great significance. This study prepared bio-asphalt/TLA composite modified asphalt binder by adding 25% Trinidad Lake Asphalt (TLA) into different contents of bio-asphalt modified asphalt binder, aiming to improve its aging resistance. Various tests were conducted to evaluate the physical properties and aging mechanism. The results showed that the composite modified asphalt binder exhibited better aging resistance and compatibility with TLA and petroleum asphalt binder.

Analysis of the chemical properties and high-temperature rheological properties of MDI modified bio-asphalt

Linlong Shao et al.

Summary: In this study, MDI was used as a chemical modifier to improve the high temperature rheological properties of bio-asphalt. The addition of MDI increased the content of macromolecular polymers in the bio-asphalt through a nucleophilic addition reaction. The MDI modifier effectively enhanced the permanent non-deformability of the bio-asphalt.

Polyphosphoric acid and plasticizer modified asphalt: Rheological properties and modification mechanism

Ruimeng Song et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performance of plasticizer and polyphosphoric acid (PPA) modified asphalts and their impact on high and low temperature properties. The results indicate that the addition of PPA effectively improves the high temperature deformation resistance and elastic recovery ability of plasticizer modified asphalts, with the improvement degree positively correlated to the PPA content. The combination of plasticizer and PPA modification is simple and shows promising overall performance.

Analysis of micromechanical properties of algae bio-based bio-asphalt-mineral interface based on molecular simulation technology

Wuxing Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the micromechanical properties of bio-asphalt with different ratios of bio-oil through molecular dynamics simulations. The results showed that the amount of bio-oil directly affected the interfacial energy and diffusion rate between bio-asphalt and mineral materials. Modification is necessary before widespread application of bio-asphalt in road engineering, and understanding the reasons for its poor performance is crucial.

Polyphosphoric Acid's synergy with bio-modified bituminous composites

Masoumeh Mousavi et al.

Summary: Research has shown that different bitumens react differently to the same dose of polyphosphoric acid (PPA) due to unexpected synergistic or antagonistic interactions between PPA and bitumen components. Among five bio-modifiers tested in the study - wood pellets, miscanthus, castor oil, corn stover, or waste vegetable oil - wood pellets have the highest synergy with PPA, followed by miscanthus, castor oil, and corn stover. The study also found strong non-covalent interactions between PPA oligomers and lignin units in the wood-based bio-modifier.

Summary: This study determined the rheological properties of unaged and RTFO-aged bio-asphalt binders using experimental and modelling methods, showing that different percentages of CPO content influence the rheological properties. The modeling results had an R-2 value greater than 0.99, indicating a good agreement with experimental results.
