Summary: Elastomers, especially diene-rubbers, can be damaged by thermal/oxygen aging, resulting in reduced elasticity and premature failure. Antioxidants are essential to slow down the aging process and extend the service life of rubber composites. This review provides an overview of recent progress in rubber antioxidants, including their oxidation process, strategies for improving antioxidative efficiency, minimizing blooming and migration, and addressing toxicity issues. Despite extensive research, there are still unresolved scientific and technological issues, and the future trends of rubber antioxidants are discussed.

Flexible humidity sensors composed with electrodes of laser induced graphene and sputtered sensitive films derived from poly (ether-ether-ketone)

Junjie Wang et al.

Summary: A new and convenient method was proposed to prepare flexible humidity sensors based on laser-induced graphene (LIG-IDE) and impedance-type hygroscopic film on flexible PEEK substrates. The humidity sensors exhibited good sensing properties with high sensitivity, fast response/recovery time, and a wide operating range of relative humidity. The mechanism study revealed that the impedance-humidity response was due to the formation of hydrophilic functional groups on the polymer chains. This novel approach provides a high-performance flexible humidity sensor for gas and humidity sensing applications.

Antioxidant modified graphene oxide for robust and highly aging resistant rubber composites

Bangchao Zhong et al.

Summary: In this study, rubber antioxidant poly(1,2-dihydro-2,2,4-trimethylquinoline) (RD) was used as an organic surface modifier of graphene oxide (GO) to develop highly anti-aging rubber composites. The RD was chemically bonded to the GO surface and effectively reduced the oxygen-containing groups. The modified GO showed improved dispersion in styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) matrix and enhanced interfacial interaction with rubber chains, leading to superior mechanical performance and thermal conductivity of SBR/GO-RD composites. Moreover, the SBR/GO-RD composites exhibited exceptional long-term thermal-oxidative aging resistance, making them suitable for harsh service conditions.

Summary: This study investigated the synergistic efficiency of silica nanoparticles and rosemary extract in improving both the thermal and radiation stabilities of a polymer substrate. The results of chemiluminescence measurements showed that the combination of silica nanoparticles and rosemary extract had a synergistic effect on the stability of the polymer matrix. The activation energy values calculated using the Arrhenius method indicated the contribution of the inorganic/organic antioxidant couple to the stabilization of the polymer.

Multiple stabilization roles of thermally reduced graphene oxide for both thermo- and photo-oxidation of polypropylene: deter, delay, and defend

Yusong He et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that thermally reduced graphene oxide (TrGO) has inhibitory effects on the thermo- and photo-oxidation of isotactic polypropylene (iPP), with stronger stabilization effects observed as the TrGO content increases. Under photo-oxidation, TrGO leads to an increase in the proportion of ketones and lactones, indicating different degradation mechanisms. Through UV-Vis spectroscopy and oxygen permeability tests, versatile stabilization mechanisms of TrGO such as UV light blocking, oxygen diffusion suppression, and free radicals scavenging were revealed.

Wettability of graphene, water contact angle, and interfacial water structure

Eunchan Kim et al.

Summary: Understanding water interactions with graphene is crucial in various applications. Vibrational sum frequency generation (VSFG) spectroscopy is capable of elucidating the hydrogen-bonding structure of water at the graphene-water interface. Specifically, increasing the number of graphene layers reveals water molecules with non-H-bonded, dangling OH groups, which correlate with the water adhesion energy of graphene. VSFG spectroscopy is a valuable technique for measuring water adhesion energy on confined interfaces.

Mechanistic insights into ion-beam induced reduction of graphene oxide: An experimental and theoretical study

Zoran Jovanovic et al.

Summary: Graphene oxide (GO) has attracted increasing interest due to its controllable and adjustable properties, especially in the field of electronic and electrochemical charge storage devices. In this study, the influence of 15 keV proton-beam irradiation on the structure and surface chemistry of GO was investigated. The results showed that proton irradiation partially reduces the GO, with preferential removal of alkoxy and epoxy groups. A linear relationship was found between the decrease in oxygen content and the increase in disorder of the GO structure. Theoretical calculations revealed that the reduction of GO can occur through a single- or multi-step process, depending on the type of basal-plane or edge oxygen group.
