A Time-Domain Method for Ultrasound Concrete Health Monitoring Using In Situ Piezoelectric Transducers

Amirabbas Hadizade et al.

Summary: This article presents a smart time-domain technique that uses embedded piezoelectric transducers to detect flaws in concrete structures. The method relies on the time-of-flight of ultrasound waves generated and sensed by the transducers, which are embedded in the concrete structure before pouring the concrete. A damage index is introduced to quantify the likelihood of defects in the region between the two probes. The index is comprised of a normalization function that is independent of signal strength and not sensitive to the amount of coupling between the sensors and the structure. A sliding mode extremum-seeking method is used for real-time calculation of the damage index. The proposed health monitoring system is verified through experimental results and shows improved performance compared to a conventional grid search method.

Study on multi-frequency characteristics of a longitudinal ultrasonic transducer with stepped horn

Guo Li et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the multi-frequency characteristics of a longitudinal ultrasonic transducer with a stepped horn, and optimizes the design using the electromechanical equivalent circuit method, including key performance parameters such as input impedance and velocity amplification ratio of the transducer. The relationships between electromechanical coupling coefficients, velocity amplification, excitation position of the piezoelectric stack, and size of the stepped horn are analyzed to determine the optimal design parameters of the multi-frequency transducer. Experimental testing of the electromechanical properties of the transducer validates the theoretical analysis and finite element results.

Sha Wang et al.

Summary: This article develops a high-power piezoelectric transformer based on sandwiched piezoelectric transducers with multioutput characteristics. The accuracy of the electromechanical equivalent circuit model (EECM) is verified by finite element method and experiments. The output power of the sandwiched piezoelectric transformers can reach at least 45 W and maintain an efficiency of approximately 35% under high-input electric power.
