Toward accurate evaluation of bulk hardness from nanoindentation testing at low indent depths

Pengcheng Zhu et al.

Summary: Estimations of bulk hardness from nanoindentation can be uncertain due to various factors, but with proper testing methods and corrections for effects like pileup, accurate predictions can be made for different materials. A study on high purity Fe and Fe-Cr alloys showed consistent results under different conditions, with pileup corrections helping to improve the accuracy of bulk hardness measurements.

Activation volume and the role of solute atoms in Al-Mg-Si alloy processed by equal channel angular extrusion

Amel Soula et al.

Summary: Grain refinement to the sub-micron scale was found to enhance both strength and plasticity. The investigation of strain rate sensitivity in an Al-Mg-Si alloy revealed the influence of solute atoms on pure grain boundary sliding. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed dislocation activity and grain boundary emission. Ageing treatment increased the contribution of grain boundary sliding while reducing the residual activation volume.
