Molecular-Level Insight into Charge Carrier Transport and Speciation in Solid Polymer Electrolytes by Chemically Tuning Both Polymer and Lithium Salt

Brigette A. . Fortuin et al.

Summary: The chemical modification of solid polymer electrolytes in Li-metal batteries has been studied to enhance cell performance. This study investigates simultaneous chemical modification of the polymer matrix and lithium salt, examining ion coordination environments, ion transport mechanisms, and molecular speciation. By substituting F atoms with H atoms in the LiTFSI salt, lithium(difluoromethanesulfonyl) (trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiDFTFSI) and lithium bis(difluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiDFSI) salts are formed, promoting anion immobilization and increasing the lithium transference number. Additionally, replacing poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) alters charge carrier speciation, affecting macroscopic properties such as Li+ conductivity and transference number.

Cathode materials for halide-based aqueous redox flow batteries: recent progress and future perspectives

Guolong Lu et al.

Summary: As the global population grows rapidly, energy resources are facing significant shortages. The development of renewable resources is urgently needed to meet human demands. The redox flow battery (RFB) is a cost-effective, stable, and convenient solution for large-scale stationary electrical energy storage applications, unlike lithium-ion batteries which have safety and cost concerns. The aqueous redox flow battery (ARFB), in particular, shows promise for larger power grids due to its unique energy storage mechanism using electrolyte-filled tanks. By controlling the volume and concentration of electro-active species (EAS), the ARFB can modulate battery parameters. Halogens offer excellent properties as EAS for ARFB, such as low cost and appropriate potential, leading to an efficient, safe, and affordable energy storage system (ESS). Additionally, material (electrode) design and adjustment are crucial for achieving strong activity, high sensitivity, convenience, and practicality.

Effect of Mg Cation Diffusion Coefficient on Mg Dendrite Formation

Yuxing Zhao et al.

Summary: Dendrite formation is a significant concern in metal anode-based battery systems. It has been found that magnesium (Mg) metal anode can indeed grow dendrites at high current densities, contrary to the traditional belief. The concentration polarization effect caused by the decrease in Mg-ion concentration on the electrode surface with increasing current density plays a crucial role in dendrite growth, particularly at the tips of protrusions on the electrode surface. The addition of LiCl to conventional APC electrolytes can effectively suppress Mg dendrite formation, mainly due to the enhanced Mg cation diffusion coefficient.

Unveiling the Role of Tetrabutylammonium and Cesium Bulky Cations in Enhancing Na-O2 Battery Performance

Idoia Ruiz Larramendi et al.

Summary: The use of bulky cations TBA(+) and Cs+ in Na-O-2 batteries as electrolyte additives helps stabilize sodium superoxide and promote larger NaO2 cube growth, with Cs+ showing a stronger effect. Both additives increase discharge capacity, with Cs+ providing a 50% enhancement. TBA(+) improves superoxide stabilization, but steric hindrance limits its interaction compared to Cs+. The presence of Cs+ leads to a more stable solid-electrolyte interphase, enhancing the cycle life of Na-O-2 batteries.

Dynamical Ion Association and Transport Properties in PEO-LiTFSI Electrolytes: Effect of Salt Concentration

Peibin Kang et al.

Summary: In this study, molecular dynamics simulations were used to investigate ion association and transport properties of PEO-lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide electrolytes at different salt concentrations. The results reveal the existence of distinct ion-ion correlations at different salt concentrations and show that ion pairs are the stable structures for ion transport. The average lifetime of ion clusters is affected by salt concentrations, but their transport rates remain unchanged.
