Towards a sustainable future: Nexus between the sustainable development goals and waste management in the built environment

Sampriti Roy et al.

Summary: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were introduced in 2015 to provide a roadmap for various domains of development. Waste management in the Built Environment (BE) has been identified as significantly involved in achieving the SDGs and ensuring a sustainable future. This review discusses the current environmental and social factors related to waste management in the BE, highlights the importance of waste management in each SDG, and presents challenges, opportunities, and innovative approaches in the waste sector. Additionally, cooperative game theory is presented as a tool for better identifying gaps in waste laws compliance and predicting future behavior to form better waste management policies based on the SDGs.

Predictability of higher heating value of biomass feedstocks via proximate and ultimate analyses-A comprehensive study of artificial neural network applications

Fatih Gulec et al.

Summary: This study applies artificial neural network (ANN) models to predict the higher heating value (HHV) of biomass feedstocks and comprehensively analyzes the factors that affect the prediction, including activation functions, algorithms, hidden layers, dataset, and randomization. The results show that using ANN models trained by the combination of ultimate-proximate analyses (UAPA) datasets, with sigmoidal activation functions (tansig and logsig), and with Levenberg-Marquardt (lm) or Bayesian Regularization (br) algorithms as training activation functions, can provide accurate HHV prediction.

Interpretable machine learning to model biomass and waste gasification

Simon Ascher et al.

Summary: Machine learning has shown promise in modeling thermochemical processes like gasification, but their black box nature raises trust and learning concerns. This study used seven different machine learning methods to model biomass and waste gasification and found that gradient boosting regression performed the best. By combining global and local interpretability methods, the understanding of black box models was improved, enabling policymakers and investors to make more informed decisions about gasification process design.
