Light harvesting regulation: A versatile network of key components operating under various stress conditions in higher plants

Daria Vetoshkina et al.

Summary: Light harvesting in photosynthesis is regulated through two main strategies: controlling the amount of light energy at the absorption level and regulating the amount of absorbed energy at the utilization level. The first strategy involves changes in the size of the photosynthetic antenna, which can occur in the short-term or long-term depending on light conditions. The second strategy involves redirecting energy to waste via thermal energy dissipation in the photosystem II antenna. Both strategies play a crucial role in ensuring plant sustainability under various environmental conditions.

Light-Driven Aqueous Dissipative Pseudorotaxanes with Tunable Fluorescence Enabling Deformable Nano-Assemblies

Xiao-Fang Hou et al.

Summary: Here we report light-activated convertible pseudorotaxanes (PRs) that can self-assemble and show tunable fluorescence, enabling deformable nano-assemblies. When exposed to light, a specific combination of molecules transform into a transient form, which can thermally relax to its original form in the dark, accompanied by periodic fluorescence changes. The self-assembly of these PRs leads to the formation of octahedral and spherical nanoparticles, which can be used for dynamic imaging of the Golgi apparatus.

Bo Song et al.

Summary: We have developed a catalyst-free, atom-economical interfacial amino-yne click polymerization method for the synthesis of aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen)-based free-standing porous organic polymer (POP) films at room temperature. These films exhibited excellent crystalline properties and good porosity as confirmed by X-ray diffraction and N-2 uptake experiments, respectively. The thickness of the POP films could be easily controlled by adjusting the monomer concentration. Furthermore, these AIEgen-based POP films demonstrated high luminescence with a photoluminescent quantum yield of up to 37.8% and displayed good chemical and thermal stability. Moreover, the introduction of an organic dye into the POP film allowed for the formation of an artificial light-harvesting system with a large red-shift, highly efficient energy-transfer ability, and high antenna effect.

In this study, Pt-II fluorescent macrocycles were self-assembled into nanospheres and showed emission-enhancement characteristics in the presence of water. The macrocycles served as energy donors in a sequential two-step energy transfer process to a hydrophobic dye, facilitated by the presence of another dye as a bridge. The control of this energy transfer process was demonstrated by tuning the chain length of the alkyl group attached to the macrocycles.
