Numerical simulation of natural gas hydrate development with radial horizontal wells based on thermo-hydro-chemistry coupling

Feifei Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the efficiency of natural gas hydrate production using radial horizontal wells. A multi-field coupling model is developed to describe the various processes involved and is verified using experiments. Simulation results show that radial horizontal wells have a larger and more significant effect on hydrate dissociation compared to vertical wells. Increasing the length and/or diameter of the radial horizontal wells enhances gas production rate. The study suggests that three branches are optimal for radial horizontal wells. This research provides valuable suggestions and theoretical reference for the development of natural gas hydrate reservoirs.

Sediment waves control origins of submarine canyons

Xingxing Wang et al.

Summary: Submarine canyons that migrate eastward and have regular spacing are well-developed at the northern South China Sea. The canyons are localized in the troughs between sediment waves and their migration is forced by the migration of the confining sediment waves. This study presents a new mechanism for the origin of such submarine canyons, attributing them to the formation of regularly spaced sediment waves generated by contour currents.

Numerical analysis on gas production performance by using a multilateral well system at the first offshore hydrate production test site in the Shenhu area

Xinxin Cao et al.

Summary: Multilateral well technique is a promising approach to enhance gas recovery in heterogeneous hydrate reservoirs. A 3D numerical model is proposed to predict the production performance of hydrate reservoirs using multilateral wells. The optimal deployment location and branch length for dual-branch and quad-branch scenarios are determined. Dual-lateral wells have the most favorable yield-increasing effects compared to vertical wells. Well interference between branches may exist and worsens with an increase in branch number. This research provides insight into the industrialized co-production of hydrate and free gas.

Dependence of thermal conductivity on the phase transition of gas hydrate in clay sediments

Rupeng Wei et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effective thermal conductivity (ETC) of fine-grained sediment during ice melting, hydrate formation, and decomposition. The results show that ETC decreases during ice melting and hydrate decomposition, while it increases during hydrate formation. Samples with higher initial water saturation are more susceptible to the effects of hydrate formation and decomposition.

Prospect of marine natural gas hydrate stimulation theory and technology system

Wu Nengyou et al.

Summary: The key to realizing the commercial production of natural gas hydrate (NGH) is to significantly increase the NGH productivity, whether by enlarging the drainage area, improving dissociation efficiency, or enhancing seepage conditions. The use of complex-structure wells, multiple-well patterns, novel production methods, and reservoir stimulation technologies can greatly increase NGH productivity. However, there are technical bottlenecks in fundamental research on NGH production that need to be addressed, such as sample preparation, simulated reservoir monitoring, and mechanical coupling technologies. The combined application of complex-structure wells, well-pattern production models, novel production methods, and reservoir stimulation technologies are key to increasing NGH productivity in a significant scale.
