Performance and deactivation mechanism of a carbon-based solid acid catalyst in the esterification of soybean saponin acid oil

Weiqi Tang et al.

Summary: In this study, a bamboo charcoal-based solid acid catalyst (BC) was prepared by one-step carbonization and sulfonation. The BC had a specific surface area of 4.54 m2/g, pore volume of 0.0142 cm3/g, and acid density of 1.476 mmol/g. The catalytic activity and deactivation mechanism of the BC in the esterification of soybean saponin acid oil (SAO) and methanol were investigated. The results showed that the conversion yield of esterification reached 98.28% under optimal reaction conditions, but decreased after reuse batches due to the loss and chemical derivatization of sulfonic acid groups on the BC.

Renewable polymers and plastics: Performance beyond the green

Alessandro Pellis et al.

Summary: Research has shown that more than 70% of the costs associated with plastics come from the extraction and processing of fossil raw materials, and the price of fossil-based plastics would increase by 44% if businesses fully covered this impact. Therefore, disclosing the hidden costs of plastics can dispel the myth of the expensiveness of renewable polymers. However, market adoption of bio-based plastics should be based on their functional properties rather than just their green credentials.
