Thibaud Soumagne et al.

Summary: In this study, 10% of ambulatory patients with GOLD 2-4 COPD had S. maltophilia detected in their sputum, which was significantly associated with mortality risk, indicating a potential marker of overall morbidity in patients.

The sputum microbiome and clinical outcomes in patients with bronchiectasis: a prospective observational study

Alison J. Dicker et al.

Summary: The microbiome in bronchiectasis patients is relatively stable over time, with lower diversity associated with disease severity, decreased lung function, and worsened symptoms. Dominance of certain bacteria, such as Pseudomonas, is linked to severe disease, increased inflammation, and more frequent exacerbations. Patients with a Pseudomonas-dominant microbiome have a higher risk of mortality and experience more exacerbations during follow-up compared to those with other dominant genera.
