Promoting halogen-bonding catalyzed living radical polymerization through ion-pair strain

Shiwen Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, triaminocyclopropenium (TAC) iodides were used as highly potent catalysts for halogen-bonding catalyzed living radical polymerization. The unique effect of ion-pair strain between the TAC cation and the iodide anion promoted high catalytic efficiency in halogen-bonding catalysis. The TAC iodides showed general applicability and surpassed previously reported organic iodide catalysts. Furthermore, the TAC-iodides also showed promising feasibility in catalyzing radical depolymerization.

Structure directing roles of weak noncovalent interactions and charge-assisted hydrogen bonds in the self-assembly of solvated podands: an example of an anion-assisted dimeric water capsule

Sandeep Kumar Dey et al.

Summary: The crystal structures of two new podand molecules synthesized from 1,3,5-tris(bromomethyl)mesitylene and bromide salts have been determined, revealing the importance of weak noncovalent interactions and charge-assisted hydrogen bonds in self-assembly. The results demonstrate the role of C-H and π-π interactions in the formation of organized three-dimensional structures, as well as the involvement of hydrogen bonding in dimeric capsular assembly. Compared to the podand in its dibromide and tetrabromide salts, the protonated podand lacks lattice water due to intramolecular hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions. The study also reveals different degrees of protonation in podand 3, which can be observed by variable shifts in the NMR spectra.

Mechanically interlocked molecular handcuffs

Nicholas Pearce et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the field of mechanically interlocked molecules that utilize a handcuff component. The different structures of rotaxanes and catenanes that interlock different components using the handcuff motif are discussed, and a new nomenclature is proposed to unify terminology. By interpreting this class of molecules in a unified manner, new opportunities for employing this structural unit for new architectures are identified.
