Magnetic structure of the two-dimensional XY antiferromagnet Sr2CoSi2O7 studied using single-crystal neutron diffraction

Rajesh Dutta et al.

Summary: We conducted a study on a multiferroic Sr2CoSi2O7 (SCSO) single crystal using polarized and unpolarized neutron diffraction. Our measurements confirmed the existence of melilite-type tetragonal P4 over bar 21m space group as the parent structure of SCSO at 15 K, but revealed symmetry lowering with the possible orthorhombic Cmm'2' and P212'12' magnetic space groups at 2.3 K. The obtained ordered magnetic moments in both Cmm'2' and P212'12' magnetic space groups were around 2.86 and 2.94 mu B/Co2+ respectively, lying in the ab plane. Furthermore, our spin polarized flipping ratio measurements supported the presence of strong easy-plane spin anisotropy responsible for the in-plane order below TN as indicated by our bulk magnetization data.

Summary: In this study, the authors conducted a systematic structural study of Ba2MnGe2O7 single crystal under varying temperatures using single crystal synchrotron radiation diffraction. The results provide detailed knowledge of the microscopic structural parameters and reveal interesting reflection phenomena. These findings are important for understanding the orbital hybridization in multiferroic Ba2MnGe2O7.

Nontrivial temperature dependence of magnetic anisotropy in multiferroic Ba2MnGe2O7

Shunsuke Hasegawa et al.

Summary: In this study, the temperature dependences of static magnetization and spin excitation in the square lattice multiferroic Ba2MnGe2O7 were measured. It was found that the anisotropy gap of the observed low-energy mode is scaled by electric polarization, and the spin-nematic interaction in the effective spin Hamiltonian is responsible for the easy-axis anisotropy. The nontrivial behavior of the anisotropy gap was rationalized as a change in the hybridized d-p orbital with temperature, leading to the temperature dependence of the spin-nematic interaction.

Spin dynamics study and experimental realization of tunable single-ion anisotropy in multiferroic Ba2CoGe2O7 under external magnetic fields

Rajesh Dutta et al.

Summary: A spin-wave study on multiferroic Ba2CoGe2O7 under magnetic fields reveals highly dispersive in-plane transverse spin-wave modes and two electromagnon modes around 3.5 meV. The decrease in single-ion anisotropy constant with increasing magnetic field is consistent with linear spin-wave theory. These results indicate that field-dependent single-ion anisotropy is crucial in determining the characteristics of spin-wave modes in the material.
