Differential evolution-assisted salp swarm algorithm with chaotic structure for real-world problems

Hongliang Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a chaotic SSA with differential evolution (CDESSA) to improve the convergence speed and accuracy of the salp swarm algorithm (SSA) in handling complex optimization problems. Experimental results demonstrate that CDESSA performs significantly better than the original SSA and other compared methods in solving real-parameter optimization and engineering optimization problems.

Thermo-economic optimization of an enhanced geothermal system (EGS) based on machine learning and differential evolution algorithms

Summary: This study proposes an optimization framework based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Differential Evolution (DE) to optimize a three-horizontal-well Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) in the Qiabuqia field, considering the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) as an economic performance indicator. The results show that the proposed framework can significantly save operation time and achieve the lowest LCOE among all random cases.

Introducing a novel multi-objective optimization model for volunteer assignment in the post-disaster phase: Combining fuzzy inference systems with NSGA-II and NRGA

Peyman Rabiei et al.

Summary: Each year, disasters cause massive damage and loss of lives. Volunteers play a crucial role in managing these crises. However, poor volunteer management can create further problems. To address this, a model is proposed to tackle the volunteer assignment problem by prioritizing the needs of Emergency Department (ED) centers and the satisfaction of selected volunteers. Fuzzy Inference Systems (FISs) and evolutionary algorithms are employed to solve the model and compare the performance of different algorithms.

The value of NGOs in disaster management and governance in South Korea and Japan

Eun-Seon Park et al.

Summary: The roles of NGOs in disaster management have become increasingly important as the complexity of disasters grows. This study examines the values of NGOs in disaster management and governance in Japan and South Korea. Findings show that NGOs play a crucial role in enhancing community resilience and providing relief supplies and psychological therapy. However, there are some differences between the two countries in terms of NGO management and coordination.

Volunteer rescue dispatch during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 epidemic: Using the recruitment of volunteers for pneumonia epidemic prevention and control in Chun'an County as an example

Liting Chen et al.

Summary: A many to-many two-sided matching volunteer dispatch method based on an improved predator-search algorithm is proposed to solve the problem of volunteer dispatch during the COVID-19 epidemic. Different evaluation index sets for volunteers and rescue tasks are developed with weightings determined using the analytic hierarchy process. The method calculates the satisfaction of both parties using the triangular fuzzy number and builds a matching model based on their demands. The improved predator-search algorithm is used to solve the model, and its feasibility and advantages are demonstrated through a case study on volunteer recruitment for pneumonia epidemic prevention and control in Chun'an County.

Two-sided matching model for assigning volunteer teams to relief tasks in the absence of sufficient information

Sheng-Qun Chen et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel approach to solve the problem of volunteer team dispatching from the perspective of two-sided matching, aiming to avoid bias in evaluation and improve satisfaction for bilateral participants. By recommending potential matching targets based on available information and subjective preferences, it effectively addresses the issue of unknown preference order in two-sided matching situations.

Social Vulnerability Factors and Reported Post-Disaster Needs in the Aftermath of Hurricane Florence

Julia Crowley

Summary: The research found that following Hurricane Florence, females, the elderly, toddlers, non-English speakers, and minority populations were major factors influencing emergency needs. Those over 25 with bachelor's degrees, females, toddlers, non-English speakers, and minority populations were major factors influencing food needs. The elderly, toddlers, and non-English speakers over 5 years old were major factors influencing shelter needs.
