Sulfate sensitivity of aquatic organism in soft freshwaters explored by toxicity tests and species sensitivity distribution

Juha Karjalainen et al.

Summary: Elevated concentrations of sulfate in waterways, caused by anthropogenic activities, can harm aquatic life in freshwaters. This study conducted chronic and acute sulfate toxicity tests with aquatic organisms from 10 families, providing valuable data on soft freshwater conditions. The results identified the most sensitive species to sulfate and derived hazardous concentrations for soft freshwaters. The study found that most tested organisms could tolerate high sulfate concentrations, but harmful effects were observed on the reproduction of Daphnia longispina and the growth of Lymnaea stagnalis at specific sulfate levels.

Expression and functional characterization of the mannose receptor (MR) from Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in response to bacterial infection

Xiaoxue Yin et al.

Summary: This study revealed the crucial role of mannose receptor in response against bacterial infection in Nile tilapia. The expression of mannose receptor is regulated by cell stimulation, and it can modulate the phagocytic ability of monocytes/macrophages to pathogenic bacteria.

Integrated application of multi-omics approach and biochemical assays provides insights into physiological responses to saline-alkaline stress in the gills of crucian carp (Carassius auratus)

Yingjie Liu et al.

Summary: This study reveals the molecular and metabolic mechanisms of crucian carp under saline-alkaline stress, demonstrating that long-term high saline-alkaline stress causes gill oxidative stress and changes in physiological parameters. Through multi-omics and biochemical analysis, the research found that crucian carp regulates ammonia transport through Rh glycoprotein, increases glutamine and urea synthesis to mitigate the adverse effects of saline-alkaline water, and induces apoptosis and immune response.

Genome-wide identification and characterization of the C2 domain family in Sorghum bicolor (L.) and expression profiles in response to saline-alkali stress

Jiangshuai Niu et al.

Summary: The C2 domain family proteins in sorghum play important roles in response to abiotic stress. Through genomic analysis, 69 C2 domain genes were identified, distributed on 10 chromosomes, with different gene structures and functional domains. These genes are involved in organic transport and catalytic activity in specific locations in the cell, and play roles in response to abiotic and biotic stress. In addition, C2 family genes show differential expression in different plant parts and exhibit different expression patterns under saline-alkali stress. The present research provides comprehensive information for further analysis of the molecular function of C2 domain family genes in sorghum.

Transcriptome analysis reveals the mechanism of alkalinity exposure on spleen oxidative stress, inflammation and immune function of Luciobarbus capito

Xinchi Shang et al.

Summary: The study conducted transcriptomic profiling on Luciobarbus capito spleen exposed to alkalinity stress, identifying 611 differentially expressed genes enriched in multiple pathways related to inflammation and immune function. Real-time PCR validation confirmed that alkalinity exposure leads to inflammation and immunoregulation in Luciobarbus capito spleen. These findings provide new insights into the biological effects of alkalinity in Luciobarbus capito.

Resequencing and SNP discovery of Amur ide (Leuciscus waleckii) provides insights into local adaptations to extreme environments

Shuangyi Wang et al.

Summary: The study using genome resequencing technology analyzed different populations of Amur ide, revealing genetic differences between the alkaline-adapted population from Lake Dali Nor and other freshwater populations. Twenty-one genes related to osmoregulatory regulation, inflammation and immune responses, and cardiorespiratory development were found to be associated with alkaline adaptation. Additionally, two functional codon sites of VIPR1 were identified to be under positive selection in the alkaline-adapted population.
