Disparities in early prenatal care and barriers to access among American Indian and white women in North Dakota

Zachary Sebens et al.

Summary: This study examines the structural and sociocultural determinants of prenatal care access among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) and White women in North Dakota. The findings suggest that AI/AN women have a higher risk of late prenatal care initiation and dissatisfaction with the timing of prenatal care compared to White women. AI/AN women also report a higher prevalence of barriers to care. Lack of health insurance is more common among White women.

Chronic respiratory disease disparity between American Indian/Alaska Native and white populations, 2011-2018

Kimberly G. Laffey et al.

Summary: The study found that the AI/AN population has a higher adjusted prevalence of chronic respiratory disease compared to non-Hispanic white population, but AI/AN racial status is not independently associated with the disease. Instead, indicators of low socioeconomic status, such as low annual household income and education level, are positively associated with the disease. This highlights the importance of addressing socioeconomic burdens in AI/AN populations to improve respiratory health.

Summary: This paper examines the underrepresentation of American Indian and Alaska Native people in research and health statistics in the United States, attributing this disparity to the lack of collaborative partnerships between researchers and tribes. Successful collaborations with both large and small tribes are explored, highlighting the importance of addressing issues related to cultural and scientific understanding, data ownership, privacy, dissemination, and project expansion for productive collaborations with tribal groups.
