Validation of in situ diagnostics for the detection of OH and H2O2 in liquids treated by a humid atmospheric pressure plasma jet

Steffen Schuettler et al.

Summary: A humid atmospheric pressure plasma jet was used to treat an aqueous liquid, and the transport of hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl from the plasma to the liquid was analyzed. Two in situ liquid diagnostics for each species were compared and validated. The results showed good agreement between the different methods used for detection.

Pollution and risk assessment of phenolic compounds in drinking water sources from South-Western Nigeria

Oluwaferanmi B. Otitoju et al.

Summary: This study assesses the occurrence and risk of 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP), phenol (PHE), and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) in drinking water sources in three states in Nigeria. The phenolic compounds were detected in both groundwater and surface water samples, with higher concentrations found during the rainy season. The presence of 2,4-DNP and 2,4,6-TCP in the water poses serious ecological and toxicological risks to aquatic organisms and humans.

Real-Time Detection of Hydroxyl Radical Generated at Operating Electrodes via Redox-Active Adduct Formation Using Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy

Jaxiry S. Barroso-Martinez et al.

Summary: The hydroxyl radical (•OH) is a highly attractive reactive oxygen species with potential applications in efficient wastewater treatment and electrosynthesis. However, its short lifetime poses challenges for in situ detection. In this study, we used spin traps and electron spin resonance to detect •OH in solution. We also developed a scanning electrochemical microscopy technique to detect its generation in real time from electrode surfaces. Our findings provide valuable insights for the detection and exploration of •OH in oxidation processes at electrode surfaces.

Degradation of Microplastics by a Thermal Fenton Reaction

Kunsheng Hu et al.

Summary: Microplastics are widely present in the environment and contaminate the food chain, posing potential risks to living beings. Current methods for removing microplastics from water are inefficient. In this study, a hydrothermal coupled Fenton system is developed, which can efficiently remove microplastics and maintain high efficiency in practical water bodies. This study provides a new approach for microplastic purification and insights into microplastic degradation.
