Submarine groundwater discharge in response to the construction of subsurface physical barriers in coastal aquifers

Yunhai Fang et al.

Summary: Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) plays a crucial role in coastal water quality and ecology. This study investigated the impact of subsurface physical barriers on freshwater and saline water inflows using laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. The results showed that different structures of subsurface physical barriers had varied effects on the location of freshwater discharge at the aquifer-sea interface.

Macropores and burial of dissolved organic matter affect nitrate removal in intertidal aquifers

Chao Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of macropores on freshwater-saltwater mixing and terrestrial solute transport using laboratory-scale experiments and numerical modeling. The results show that macropores modify groundwater flow dynamics, leading to larger mixing zones and increased removal of nitrate. These findings have important implications for coastal ecosystem protection and reducing nitrate fluxes.

Influence of layered heterogeneity on nitrate enrichment induced by cut-off walls in coastal aquifers

Shaobo Gao et al.

Summary: Cut-off walls have been shown to effectively mitigate seawater intrusion, but may lead to nitrate contamination in coastal aquifers. This study used numerical models to investigate the impact of stratified geological heterogeneities on nitrate accumulation induced by cut-off walls. The results suggest that aquifer heterogeneities play a primary role in regulating nitrate pollution, and the location and depth of the cut-off wall also influence nitrate enrichment.

Nitrate transport behavior behind subsurface dams under varying hydrological conditions

Yunhai Fang et al.

Summary: This study examined the combined effect of tides and subsurface dams on nitrate pollution in upstream groundwater through laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. The results showed that both tides and subsurface dams increased nitrate contamination, with tides having a more significant impact. Interestingly, the joint action of tides and subsurface dams led to a greater increase in nitrate pollution than their individual effects.

Juan Antonio Torres-Martinez et al.

Summary: The study identified sources and transformations of nitrate in groundwater in Comarca Lagunera, northern Mexico. High nitrate concentrations were found in over 32% of sites, primarily sourced from concentrated animal-feeding operations' manure and urban sewage. Biogeochemical transformations varied along groundwater flow paths.

Numerical assessment of compressed air injection for mitigating seawater intrusion in a coastal unconfined aquifer

Yongge Zang et al.

Summary: The study showed that using compressed air injection as a method to control seawater intrusion is effective. By injecting compressed air into the toe of the saltwater wedge in the aquifer, a hydraulic gradient driving seawater back towards the ocean is produced. The injection rate of air is related to operational costs, but the increase is not significant as the change rate decreases.

Effectiveness and comparison of physical barriers on seawater intrusion and nitrate accumulation in upstream aquifers

Qiguo Sun et al.

Summary: The construction of a physical barrier can reduce nitrate discharge to the sea and lead to nitrate accumulation in upstream aquifers. The accumulation degree is influenced by various factors, including the barrier height, location, nitrate infiltration rate, concentration, inflow, and dissolved organic carbon concentration. The build-up of nitrates is a long-term process that affects denitrification due to the formation of a nitrate accumulation zone behind the barrier.

Experimental and numerical evidence on the influence of tidal activity on the effectiveness of subsurface dams

Yunhai Fang et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively assessed the effectiveness of subsurface dams for controlling seawater intrusion and upstream groundwater pollution, taking into consideration sea boundary conditions including static and tidal scenarios. The results revealed that the effective and increased discharge height range (E&IDHR) of subsurface dams depended on dam location, and tidal fluctuations significantly impacted this range. By acknowledging the E&IDHR, numerical and parametric uncertainties can be taken into account in designing subsurface dams to achieve optimal effectiveness in preventing seawater intrusion and upstream groundwater pollution.

Analytical, Experimental, and Numerical Investigation of Partially Penetrating Barriers for Expanding Island Freshwater Lenses

Min Yan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of partially penetrating barriers placed at the shoreline on circular and strip island lenses. The results show that partially penetrating barriers of sufficient depth can produce comparable results to fully penetrating barriers, and are more cost-effective. The sensitivity analysis indicates that lower barrier permeability and greater barrier thickness require a larger critical depth for achieving similar lens size.

Influence of nitrogen-based fertilization on nitrates occurrence in groundwater of hilly vineyards

Roberta Zambito Marsala et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of fertilization practices for grape cultivation on groundwater quality in the Tidone Valley of northwest Italy. Results showed high NO3- concentrations in groundwater, mainly from agricultural fertilization. Despite the extensive use of inorganic nitrogen fertilizers, vineyards had a low to moderate impact on regional groundwater NO3- concentrations.

Influence of the subsurface physical barrier on nitrate contamination and seawater intrusion in an unconfined aquifer

Shengnan Ke et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of subsurface physical barriers (SPBs) on nitrate pollution (NP) in groundwater, finding that SPBs can slow down the migration of nitrate and change the shape of contaminated areas. Additionally, the obstruction effect of cut-off walls on NP was more prominent, and factors such as hydraulic gradient and SPB height were found to be crucial in influencing NP and seawater intrusion (SWI). Therefore, the design of SPBs in coastal areas should pay particular attention to these two factors.

Effects of mixed physical barrier on residual saltwater removal and groundwater discharge in coastal aquifers

Mingpeng Gao et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that mixed physical barriers (MPBs) are effective in preventing seawater intrusion, but may impact the discharge of fresh groundwater and removal of trapped saltwater. The efficiency of MPBs in treating saltwater is high and positively correlated with wall depth and hydraulic gradient, providing valuable insights for decision-makers to protect groundwater resources in coastal areas.

Summary: Excessively high levels of nitrate in groundwater pose a threat to human health and the environment, requiring a surface-to-groundwater profile perspective to address the issue. Nitrate management measures include source reduction, in-situ groundwater remediation, and polluted groundwater reuse, with the use of mathematical simulation models and life cycle assessment methods to support decision-making.
