Environmental and health risk implications of unregulated emissions from advanced biofuels in a Euro 6 engine

Silvana Arias et al.

Summary: This study investigates the unregulated emissions in gas and particles from a Euro 6b diesel engine, operated with four unconventional and advanced biofuels, blended with diesel fuel and pure hydro -treated vegetable oil. The results show that carbonyl emissions were higher than gaseous PAH emissions at low-speed phase, and both gas and particle emissions contribute to the toxicity associated with carcinogenic PAH.

What does a low-carbon fuel standard contribute to a policy mix? An interdisciplinary review of evidence and research gaps

Jonn Axsen et al.

Summary: A low-carbon fuel standard (LCFS) requires fuel suppliers to decrease the carbon intensity of their fuels on a lifecycle basis. LCFS policies have been implemented in California, North America, Europe, and Brazil, but there is limited research on their contribution to climate policies. This review summarizes the evidence and research gaps in terms of effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, political acceptability, and transformative signal, providing insights into the potential of LCFS in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and promoting low-carbon fuel innovation.

Nitrous oxide in diesel aftertreatment systems including DOC, DPF and urea-SCR

Yongjin Jung et al.

Summary: The study investigated the formation of Nitrous Oxide (N2O) over urea-based Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems using exhaust gases from a 3.4-liter non-road diesel engine. It was found that the formation of N2O was closely related to the SCR catalysts, the ratio of NO2 to NOx at the SCR inlet, and the SCR inlet temperatures. Depletion of NO played a crucial role in the start of N2O formation.

Optimization of low carbon fuels operation on a CI engine under a simplified driving cycle for transportation de-fossilization

Antonio F. Garcia et al.

Summary: The current focus of internal combustion engine research is on reducing pollutant emissions while maintaining or improving efficiency and fuel consumption. Studying low carbon fuels (LCF) as an alternative seems promising, but testing a fuel with different properties requires significant resources. To address this issue, a cycle simplification methodology is proposed in this study to evaluate the homologation potential of the studied fuel.

The effect of ammonia gas and UWS injection on the N2O formation in diesel engine after-treatment systems under steady and transient conditions

Hassan Raza et al.

Summary: This study investigates the N2O emission formation from heavy-duty diesel engine by injecting ammonia gas and urea water solution (UWS) in Cu-zeolite SCR. It was found that ammonia gas injection produced higher tailpipe N2O compared to UWS injection, especially during the cold and hot startup phases. Meanwhile, injecting ammonia gas can reduce the emissions of NO and NO2. Higher NH3/NOx ratio leads to increased N2O emissions and decreased NO and NO2 emissions. The concentration of N2O formation is high at an exhaust gas temperature of 200-250°C.
