Cellulose nanofibrils as rheology modifier and fluid loss additive in water-based drilling fluids: Rheological properties, rheological modeling, and filtration mechanisms

Daliang Guo et al.

Summary: This study aims to improve the rheological and filtration properties of water-based drilling fluids (WDFs) by using cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs). Results showed that the incorporation of CNFs effectively improved the rheological and filtration properties of WDFs. CNFs formed a network structure with bentonite, enhancing the viscosity, gel behavior, and temperature stability of WDFs. WDFs containing CNFs exhibited superior rheological properties and lower permeable filter cakes.

Performance evaluation of polymer nanolatex particles as fluid loss control additive in water-based drilling fluids

Jun Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a polymer nanolatex (SBAA) was synthesized using styrene, butyl acrylate, acrylamide, and 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid. The SBAA nanoparticles had a particle size of around 150 nm and a distinct core-shell structure. The filtration and permeability plugging tests demonstrated that SBAA could effectively reduce filter loss and improve mud cake quality in water-based drilling fluids.

Poly(ionic liquids) based on β-cyclodextrin as fluid loss additive in water-based drilling fluids

Fei Liu et al.

Summary: This study synthesized poly(ionic liquids) (PILs) based on beta-cyclodextrin and investigated its application as a novel fluid loss additive in water-based drilling fluids (WDFs). The PILs exhibited excellent filtration control performance, resulting in significantly reduced fluid loss volume due to the low filtration rate, thickness, and permeability of the PILs/WDFs mud cake.

Summary: This research investigates the use of graphene nanoplatelets as additives to enhance the performance of oil-based mud at high temperatures. The results show that graphene nanoplatelets significantly improve the rheological and filtration properties of oil-based mud, reducing filtration loss. Additionally, an Artificial Neural Network model is developed to predict the viscosity of oil-based mud based on different parameters.

Summary: The study demonstrates that synthesized graphene oxide nanosheet (GO-NS) acts as an excellent thermal stabilizer and structural stabilizer for Non Damaging Drilling Fluid (NDDF), leading to significant reduction in fluid loss volume. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations show that 0.5 wt% GO-NS NDDF exhibits the lowest cutting retention rate, indicating superior performance in drilling operations.

Summary: Blowouts have been a common occurrence in the oil and gas drilling activities, leading to fatalities and environmental damages. Investigating the root causes of blowouts is crucial to prevent future accidents. A blowout in the Middle East in 2017 was mainly caused by insufficient hydrostatic pressure during operation at a specific depth.

Summary: This study presents a detailed Raman spectroscopy investigation of boron-doped graphene layers and how the properties change with increasing boron content and layer number. The behavior of defect-dependent modes reaches saturation when boron content exceeds 0.48 wt. %, and these modes shift upwards with increasing layer number due to interactions between boron defects in different layers.

Study of materials to combat loss of circulation in fractures and static filtration

Andreia Silveira Freire Soares et al.

Summary: In this study, drilling fluid formulations were developed using a four-level factorial design to evaluate the effect of drilling fluid components on their rheological properties and in the loss of circulation. The incorporation of LCMs improved the rheological properties of the drilling fluid, with CMC, BT, and HG being the main factors in combating loss of circulation in the fracture and filtration phases. Additionally, the interaction of HG*CMC and BT*CMC was found to be highly significant in preventing loss of circulation.

Co-pyrolysis of cellulose/lignin and sawdust: Influence of secondary condensation of the volatiles on characteristics of biochar

Chao Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated the co-pyrolysis of cellulose or lignin with sawdust and found interactions between their volatiles. Co-pyrolysis with cellulose tended to promote bio-oil production while co-pyrolysis with lignin enhanced biochar formation. Interaction between light species from cellulose and heavier ones from lignin transformed gases into bio-oil and produced more carbonaceous solid with sawdust. Biochar from cellulose co-pyrolysis had more oxygen-containing functionalities but lower thermal stability, while that from lignin co-pyrolysis exhibited the opposite characteristics.
