First-principles prediction of structural, electronic and optical properties of alkali metals AM4BN3H10 hydrides

Ende Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the structural features and hydrogenation mechanisms of Li4BN3H10 and Rh4BN3H10 alkali metal hydrides using first-principles calculations. The results show that Li4BN3H10 and Rh4BN3H10 are thermodynamically and dynamically stable. The hydrogen storage mechanism of AM4BN3H10 hydride relies on the formation of [BH4] and [NH2] groups. The hybridization between B and H atoms in [BH4] and N and H atoms in [NH2] enables efficient hydrogen storage. Rb4BN3H10 exhibits better hydrogen release properties compared to Li4BN3H10 and Na4BN3H10 due to its narrower band gap. Overall, AM4BN3H10 hydride is a promising hydrogen storage material with high capacity.

Optoelectronic and thermoelectric characteristics of halide based double perovskites K2YAgX6 (X = Br, I) for energy storage applications

Ghulam M. Mustafa et al.

Summary: The opto-electronic properties of halide based double perovskites K2YAgBr6 and K2YAgI6 have been extensively studied using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method. The results showed that K2YAgBr6 is more stable. When the bromine is replaced with iodine, the unit cell expands, which can be explained by their relative ionic radii. The study also found that these double perovskites have ductile properties.

Tailoring the hydrogenated mechanism of Pt3Al from first-principles investigation

Yong Pan et al.

Summary: By using first-principles methods, the role of hydrogen in Pt3Al compound was investigated. It was found that hydrogen is thermodynamically stable in both cubic and tetragonal phases, and prefers to occupy the octahedral interstice in the tetragonal phase. The introduction of hydrogen weakens the volume deformation resistance, shear deformation resistance, and elastic stiffness of Pt3Al, but improves its ductility due to the electronic interaction. Moreover, hydrogen also weakens the Debye temperature of Pt3Al.

Theoretical predict the structure, elastic anisotropy and thermodynamic properties of Al5W in Al-rich region

Yong Pan et al.

Summary: Al5W compound is a promising high-temperature material with high melting point, good mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance. First-principles calculations were applied to study its structural stability, elastic properties, elastic anisotropy, and melting point. Two novel Al5W phases (orthorhombic and rhombohedral structures) were predicted, with hexagonal Al5W showing the best thermodynamic stability.

Pressure induced structural, hardness, elastic and thermodynamic properties of three MoC

Yong Pan

Summary: Insight into the high pressure behavior of MoC carbide is important for engineering applications. The study investigated the structural stability, elastic modulus, hardness, elastic anisotropy, and Debye temperature of three MoC carbides under high pressure. Results showed that the hexagonal (P-6 m2) MoC has better thermodynamic stability compared to the cubic and hexagonal (P63/mmc) MoC. The elastic modulus and hardness of the hexagonal (P-6 m2) MoC are higher, and high pressure induces a brittle-to-ductile transition.

First-principles investigation of structural stability, electronic and optical properties of suboxide (Zr3O)

Yong Pan

Summary: In this study, the structure, electronic and optical properties of Zr3O were investigated using first-principles calculations. The results showed that all three Zr3O oxides were thermodynamically and dynamically stable, with the rhombohedral (R-3c) phase being slightly more stable. Unlike ZrO2, the Zr3O oxides exhibited better electronic properties due to the electronic jump between Zr- excitation band and Zr- conduction band near the Fermi level. The rhombohedral Zr3O also showed better storage optical properties compared to the other two Zr3O oxides.

First-principles investigation of structural stability, mechanical and thermodynamic properties of Pt3Zr5 compounds

Yong Pan et al.

Summary: Pt3Zr5 has four thermodynamically stable structures, with the hexagonal phase being the most stable. The tetragonal structure exhibits stronger bulk deformation resistance, while the hexagonal structure shows higher elastic stiffness and shear deformation resistance. The high mechanical properties of Pt3Zr5 are attributed to the strong cohesive force between the Pt and Zr layers.
