'Fair and square': what do students think about the ethnicity degree awarding gap?

Billy Wong et al.

Summary: In UK higher education, minority ethnic students are less likely to graduate with a good degree compared to their White British counterparts, sparking concerns about the ethnicity degree awarding gap. This paper contributes to the gap by exploring students' perspectives on the differences in degree outcomes by ethnicity through in-depth interviews. Students propose recommendations such as greater economic support, institutional commitment to eradicate racism, increased representation, diverse curriculum, and proactive measures to reduce structural barriers.

Evaluation of Racial Microaggressions Experienced During Medical School Training and the Effect on Medical Student Education and Burnout: A Validation Study

Leah P. Chisholm et al.

Summary: The study found that underrepresented minority medical students are more likely to experience racial microaggressions, leading to feelings of burnout and compromised learning in medical school. These students also feel that there is a lack of adequate resources to address these microaggressions and their effects. Further research is needed to evaluate the impact of microaggressions on a larger scale and to develop interventions to minimize their frequency and impact.

What do patients value learning about pain? A mixed-methods survey on the relevance of target concepts after pain science education

Hayley B. Leake et al.

Summary: The study examined the pain concepts valued by individuals with persistent pain who participated in pain science education. Findings revealed that patients placed importance on understanding that pain does not necessarily indicate bodily damage, recognizing the multifactorial influences on pain, and being able to retrain an overprotective pain system to lessen pain. This patient-centered approach offers valuable insights for refining pain education interventions.

It was as if I wasn't there - Experiences of everyday racism in a Swedish medical school

Emelie Kristoffersson et al.

Summary: This study investigated how cultural/ethnic minority students at a Swedish medical school perceive and make sense of educational experiences related to their minority position. Findings showed that these students often encountered subtle adverse treatment without support from bystanders. Despite experiencing inequities, most students hesitated to label the behaviors as discriminatory or racist, possibly due to prevailing beliefs about Sweden and medical school being exempt from such issues.
