Composition and dynamics of bacterial communities during flotation in a coal preparation plant

Xizhuo Wang et al.

Summary: This study used high-throughput sequencing to investigate the composition and dynamics of bacterial communities during flotation in a coal preparation plant. The results showed a diverse bacterial community in the coal pulp, predominantly derived from raw coal. Spearman correlation analysis revealed a significant association between species and ash contents, indicating a negative impact on flotation efficiency. Nitrogen-containing reagents were identified as major factors altering the bacterial community structure. This study provides valuable insights into the bacterial diversity of coal flotation systems and serves as a basis for optimization.

Selenium and Bacillus proteolyticus SES synergistically enhanced ryegrass to remediate Cu-Cd-Cr contaminated soil*

Min Nie et al.

Summary: Heavy metal compound contaminated soil, which often contains copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr), poses a significant ecological threat. However, the application of phytoremediation in heavy metal combined contamination is limited. In this study, the researchers explored the use of exogenous selenium (Se) and Bacillus proteolyticus SES to enhance the remediation of combined Cu-Cd-Cr contaminated soil by ryegrass. The results showed that the addition of Se alone or in combination with B. proteolyticus SES significantly increased the removal rates of heavy metals in the rhizosphere soil and improved the tolerance of ryegrass to heavy metals, while also promoting the growth of specific beneficial microbes in the rhizosphere.

Constructing the active surface soil layer with ZVI-biochar amendment for simultaneous immobilization of As and Zn in both contaminated soil and groundwater: Continuous versus intermittent infiltration mode

Xiang Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a zero valent iron-biochar composite (ZVI-BC) was used to create an active surface soil layer for the simultaneous remediation of arsenic-zinc contaminated soil and groundwater. The results showed that the active soil layer effectively removed arsenic and zinc from groundwater under both continuous and intermittent infiltration modes. The immobilization mechanisms involved the precipitation of As(V) with Fe(III) and the sorption of Zn by Mn oxide. The immobilized As and Zn in the active soil layer exhibited high stability, ensuring long-term effectiveness.

Effects of combined application of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizers on tea (Camellia sinensis) growth and fungal community

Sheng Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of different fertilizer combinations on tea growth and soil quality. It finds that nitrogen is the primary limiting factor for tea growth, with nitrogen deficiency leading to decreased fungal diversity, accelerated soil acidification, and changes in fungal community composition. The relationship between tea and fungi is more significant in the topsoil than in the subsoil. These findings are important for guiding optimal fertilization strategies to maximize tea yield and quality while minimizing environmental risks.

The biochemical mechanism of enhancing the conversion of chicken manure to biogenic methane using coal slime as additive

Hongyu Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of coal slime as an additive on methane production characteristics in anaerobic digestion of chicken manure. The results show that adding an appropriate amount of coal slime can accelerate the fermentation process and enhance methane production. Moreover, it stabilizes the pH value in the liquid phase, reduces the concentrations of total ammonia nitrogen and free ammonia nitrogen, decomposes organic matter, and facilitates the consumption of volatile fatty acids. The bacterial community exhibits an increased abundance of Bacteroides, while Methanosarcina increases in the archaea. The reduction of CO2 is the main pathway for methanogenesis, and adding coal slime enhances the abundance of key enzyme genes in methane metabolism pathways.
