Graphene oxide-mediated the reduction of U(VI), Re(VII), Se(VI) and Se(IV) by Fe(II) in aqueous solutions investigated via combined batch, DFT calculation and spectroscopic approaches

Junjie Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, graphene oxide (GO) was found to mediate the reduction of U(VI), Re(VII), Se(VI), and Se(IV) in aqueous Fe(II) solution. The enhanced reduction effects of GO were attributed to facilitated electron transfer and decreased redox potential. The presence of dissolved fulvic acid (FA) significantly promoted GO-mediated reduction. GO plays an important role in mediating the reductive immobilization of radionuclides in redox-stratified environments.

Highly efficient uranium extraction by a piezo catalytic reduction-oxidation process

Yawen Cai et al.

Summary: This study reports a highly efficient uranium extraction method from water using a piezo-catalytic process. By utilizing a hollow cubic shaped Zn2SnO4/SnO2 as a piezo catalyst, the adsorbed U(VI) is reduced to UO2 and then oxidized to (UO(2)2)(2), which can be efficiently separated from the solution under ultrasonic irradiation.

Symmetry-breaking induced piezocatalysis of Bi2S3 nanorods and boosted by alternating magnetic field

Feixue Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, the centrosymmetry of Bi2S3 nanorods is broken by introducing Si defects into the crystal lattice, enabling them to efficiently reduce Cr(VI) through piezocatalysis. Moreover, the application of an alternating magnetic field (AMF) greatly enhances the piezocatalytic reduction.

Efficient persulfate activation by hematite nanocrystals for degradation of organic pollutants under visible light irradiation: Facet-dependent catalytic performance and degradation mechanism

Ting Guo et al.

Summary: The study reveals the facet-dependent persulfate activation by hematite crystals under visible light irradiation, with hematite nanoplates (NPs) showing superior performance in adsorption and generation of active species compared to nanocubes (NCs) and nanorods (NRs). The density functional theory (DFT) calculation confirms the higher adsorption capacity of NPs for persulfate, leading to more PS-Fe(III) complexes on the surface and production of radicals for pollutants oxidation.

Facet-Dependent Photodegradation of Methylene Blue by Hematite Nanoplates in Visible Light

Meirong Zong et al.

Summary: Research has shown that the exposure of different crystal facets in hematite nanostructures affects the adsorption and photodegradation efficiency of methylene blue, mainly due to variations in iron ion sites and surface structures. Experimental comparisons and theoretical calculations on the (001) and (012) facets reveal that the (001) facet exhibits a higher photodegradation rate for methylene blue.

Facet-specific reactivity of hematite nanocrystals during Fe (II)-catalyzed recrystallization

Fei Wu et al.

Summary: Hematite surfaces play a key role in the biogeochemical cycling of metal elements in the environment. The Fe(II)-catalyzed recrystallization of iron (hydr)oxides relies on the exposed facets of hematite, with {012}-exposed hematite nanocubes showing higher adsorption capacity for Fe(II)(aq) and more Fe atom exchange compared to {001}-exposed hematite nanoplates.
