Negative effect of SO2 on mercury removal over catalyst/sorbent from coal-fired flue gas and its coping strategies: A review

Honghu Li et al.

Summary: Adsorption and catalytic oxidation are the most cost-effective and feasible methods for Hg0 removal from coal-fired flue gas. However, SO2 poisoning remains a challenge for the long-term operation of most developed catalysts/sorbents. This review comprehensively discusses the negative effect of SO2 on mercury removal and proposes strategies to cope with the SO2 poisoning problem.

Regulated adsorption sites using atomically single cluster over biochar for efficient elemental mercury uptake

Jiaxing Li et al.

Summary: In this study, biomass with regulated adsorption sites for gaseous Hg-0 uptake was fabricated using a chelated coupled pyrolysis strategy. Manganese clusters anchored on biochar were found to act as highly active and durable adsorbents for Hg-0 immobilization, increasing its adsorption efficiency by up to 50%. Shrimp- and crab-based biochar adsorbents showed excellent Hg-0 removal due to their chitosan-like structure.

Strengthen the Affinity of Element Mercury on the Carbon-Based Material by Adjusting the Coordination Environment of Single-Site Manganese

Jiaxing Li et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the elemental mercury removal performance of carbon-based materials with different coordination environments and single-site manganese dispersion. The research found that the coordination environment around manganese can affect its affinity with mercury, thus influencing the adsorption capacity. It was demonstrated that single-site manganese with an atom size near 0.2 nm achieves high Hg-0 removal efficiency at 200 degrees C.
