Oxide- and Silicate-Water Interfaces and Their Roles in Technology and the Environment

Jose Leobardo Banuelos et al.

Summary: Interfacial reactions play important roles in elemental cycling on Earth and various human activities. Advances in techniques, such as ultrafast laser and X-ray sources, nanofabrication approaches, and computational chemistry, have enabled a more detailed understanding of mineral aqueous interfaces at atomic and nanometer scales. This critical review explores the progress made in the past 20 years and identifies challenges and future opportunities in understanding and predicting dynamic transient and reactive structures across greater spatial and temporal ranges, as well as systems of greater complexity.

Mineral dust aerosol impacts on global climate and climate change

Jasper F. Kok et al.

Summary: This Review summarizes the interactions and impacts of dust on the global climate and climate change. Dust affects the energy budget of Earth through interactions with radiation, clouds, atmospheric chemistry, the cryosphere and biogeochemistry. The net radiative effect of dust is -0.2 +/- 0.5 W m(-)(2), indicating a cooling effect on climate.

Differential Surface Interactions and Surface Templating of Nucleotides (dGMP, dCMP, dAMP, and dTMP) on Oxide Particle Surfaces

Izaac Sit et al.

Summary: This study investigates the surface interactions and adsorption behavior of nucleotides on oxide surfaces. The results show that the adsorption of nucleotides is influenced by pH and the presence of complementary base pairs. Adenosine and guanosine nucleotides exhibited a higher affinity for adsorption compared to cytidine and thymidine nucleotides. Complementary base pairs formed a second layer with stable hydrogen bond interactions. The findings highlight the importance of surface interactions in the adsorption of nucleotides and the templating of specific interactions between nucleotides.

Probing Individual Particles Generated at the Freshwater-Seawater Interface through Combined Raman, Photothermal Infrared, and X-ray Spectroscopic Characterization

JessicaA. Mirrielees et al.

Summary: This study investigates the chemical composition of sea spray aerosol (SSA) generated in coastal regions using an integrated analytical measurement approach. The findings reveal the diverse chemical composition and morphology of SSA particles. These findings are significant for accurately parameterizing the direct and indirect aerosol effects, as well as understanding the impacts of SSA in estuaries, river outflows, and areas of snow and ice melt.

Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier Transform Infrared and Atomic Force Microscopy-Infrared Spectroscopic Investigation of Suwannee River Fulvic Acid and Its Interactions with α-FeOOH

Deborah Kim et al.

Summary: The interaction between Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) and alpha-FeOOH was studied using ATR-FTIR and AFM-IR spectroscopic techniques. Results showed that pH affected the speciation of SRFA and its interaction with alpha-FeOOH, revealing nanoscale and microscale heterogeneities in the thin films. These measurements provided insights into the heterogeneity of natural organic matter and its interactions with mineral surfaces.

Nitrous Acid (HONO) Formation from the Irradiation of Aqueous Nitrate Solutions in the Presence of Marine Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter: Comparison to Other Organic Photosensitizers

Stephanie L. Mora Garcia et al.

Summary: The study explores the formation of HONO from nitrate solutions in the presence of different organic compounds, such as m-DOM, HA, 4-BBA, and EG, under irradiation. It shows that the addition of these organics enhances the formation of HONO, with m-DOM contributing the most over a 6-hour period. Additionally, the study highlights the strong pH dependence of HONO formation.
