Simultaneous removal of urea nitrogen and inorganic nitrogen from high-salinity wastewater by Halomonas sp. H36

Yujing Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the mechanism of NaCl tolerance of Halomonas sp. H36 was investigated, and it was proven that the strain has the function of simultaneous urea hydrolysis-nitrification-denitrification. This provides a solution for the incomplete removal of nitrogen from mixed strains and inhibition of microbial activity by high salt concentrations in high-salt urea wastewater.

Stutzerimonas frequens strain TF18 with superior heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification ability for the treatment of aquaculture effluent

Tangfeng Liu et al.

Summary: A bacterium strain TF18, known as Stutzerimonas frequens, was isolated from the Whiteleg shrimp mariculture environment. It showed strong adaptability and short colonization time due to its robust biofilm formation and auto-aggregation characteristics. The strain demonstrated high removal efficiencies for total ammonia nitrogen, NO2--N, and NO3--N in the presence of sodium acetate as carbon source and carbon-nitrogen ratio of 10, and its genes related to nitrogen removal further supported the existence of nitrate transformation pathways. These findings provide new insights for the practical application of S. frequens strain TF18 in aquaculture effluent treatment.

Novel Alcaligenes ammonioxydans sp. nov. from wastewater treatment sludge oxidizes ammonia to N-2 with a previously unknown pathway

Meng-Ru Wu et al.

Summary: Heterotrophic nitrifier strain HO-1 was identified as a novel bacterium capable of oxidizing ammonia to hydroxylamine and ultimately producing N-2 gas. Genome analysis revealed a unique denitrification pathway and the absence of genes for known ammonia monooxygenases or hydroxylamine oxidoreductases. Further experiments showed that strain HO-1 denitrified nitrite to N-2 and N2O under anaerobic and aerobic conditions, indicating a novel direct ammonia oxidation pathway named Dirammox.
